About this unit
م is m and ل is l. When ل meets ا, the two always take one special shape: لا.

m, as in “mother”مَال · money - ل
l, as in “lamp”لَيْل · night
One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
لا still counts as two letters, ل and ا, when you read and type it.
