About this unit
آ is a glottal stop followed by long ā. ى at the end of a word is also long ā.
- آglottal stop + long āآدَم · Adam, a name
- ى
final long ā, no dotsمُسْتَشْفَى · hospital
One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
A dash means the letter never joins the next letter: at the start of a word it looks as when alone, in the middle as at the end.
ى has no dots and only comes at the end.
مُوسَى, Moses, ends in ā, not in y or ī.

آ combines an initial glottal onset and long ā in a familiar shape. Final ى represents long ā, not y or ī. Compare its lack of dots with ي. These are recognition patterns, not extra basic alphabet letters.
