About this unit
د, ر and و join the letter before them but never the letter after them. They leave a gap inside the word.
- د
d, as in “day”دَار · house - رr, tapped or rolledبَرْد · cold
- و
w, as in “wet”; or ooوَرْد · roses
One letter, several shapes
A letter's shape depends on its neighbours. At the start it joins only the next letter, in the middle both neighbours, at the end only the letter before it.
A dash means the letter never joins the next letter: at the start of a word it looks as when alone, in the middle as at the end.

A gap after a non-joining letter is part of the word, not a space between words.
