Unit 14 · գ, կ, ք, խ and ղ · Meet

գ, կ, ք, խ and ղ

Read the three k sounds and the two friction sounds.

About this unit

The k family completes the three-way pattern. Two more sounds come from the back of the mouth and keep the air flowing.

  • գwine
    throat buzzes
    գինի · wine
  • կcat
    no puff of air
    կատու · cat
  • Քքwind
    puff of air
    քամի · wind
  • Խխgrapes
    air rubs, no buzz
    խաղող · grapes
  • ղsalt
    throat buzzes
    աղ · salt

Grapes, խաղող, has both: խ at the start and ղ in the middle.

Reading tips

գ / կ / ք complete the three-way stop pattern. խ and ղ keep air flowing: they are friction sounds, not stops.

Our kh and gh hints each stand for one sound. If you know French r, it can help you approach ղ; accents differ.

On your phone, add Armenian in Settings → Languages or Keyboards. On a computer, add an Armenian input language in the operating system settings.

Use the on-screen letters whenever you prefer. The ու key inserts its two written characters together; spaces and punctuation have their own keys.
