Unit 20 · Final letters keep their spelling · Meet

Final letters keep their spelling

Recognise devoicing at the ends of words.

About this unit

At the end of a word, a buzzing consonant loses its buzz. You write the letter, but hear its quiet partner.

Reading tips

At word end a voiced consonant can be heard as its voiceless partner. Хляб ends with a p-like sound, град with t, зъб with p. Write б or д as in the word card; do not respell what you hear.

Use a Bulgarian keyboard

Bulgarian has a standard BDS layout and widely used phonetic layouts. Either is optional: the guided course has on-screen tiles. Keep ъ and ь separate. Teaching acute accents may be omitted in input; the grave in ѝ belongs to the word and is not a removable stress hint.
