Monday of festival week, half past seven in the morning. The waiting room of the Javorgrad practice is already full.
Ponedjeljak, dvadeset petog svibnja. Doktorica Maja je već u ordinaciji. Uvijek dolazi rano.
Monday, the twenty-fifth of May. Doctor Maja is already at the practice. She always comes early.
AnaDobro jutro, doktorice! Danas četrdeset pacijenata.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
MajaČetrdeset? Dobro. Radimo do sedam. Prvi pacijent, molim!
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!

An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh. - Ante
Dobar dan, doktorice! Opet ja.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
MajaO, gospodine Ante! Dolazite dvaput tjedno. Kako se osjećate?
Oh, Mr Ante! You come twice a week. How do you feel?
- Ante
Loše. Bole me leđa. I noga. I glava.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
MajaI glava? Dobro. Duboko udahnite... Još jednom.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
- Ante
Doktorice, moja djeca su daleko. Kod kuće mi je jako dosadno.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
MajaNiste bolesni. Samo Vam je dosadno.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.

MajaEvo mog recepta: svako jutro Ivanin kafić. Kava, kolač i ljudi.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Ivana's café. Coffee, cake and people.
- Ante
Kolač kao lijek? Jako mi se sviđa taj recept!
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!
He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
MajaAna, ne treba mu lijek. Trebaju mu ljudi.
Ana, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
- Studentica
Dobar dan. Boli me glava. Svaki dan.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
MajaKoliko sati spavate?
How many hours do you sleep?
- Studentica
Četiri. U petak imam ispit. Zato učim noću.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.

MajaČetiri? Premalo. Umorna glava ne uči ništa.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
MajaSpavajte osam sati noću i pijte mnogo vode.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
AnaDoktorice, opet ne ručate!
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!
MajaNemam vremena, Ana. Možda kasnije.
I haven't got time, Ana. Maybe later.
AnaVaša mama je na telefonu. Treći put danas. Što da joj kažem?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
MiraMaja, opet ne jedeš. Znam. Ana mi govori sve.
Maja, you're not eating again. I know: Ana tells me everything.
MiraU četiri dolazi moj novi susjed. Bolestan je.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
MiraU četiri dolazi moja nova susjeda. Bolesna je.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
MajaZnam, mama. I ja znam sve.
I know, Mum. I know everything too.
MiraA navečer? Lana pita kad dolaziš.
And this evening? Lana is asking when you're coming.
MajaU sedam, mama. K tebi.
At seven, Mum. To your place.

MiraUvijek kažeš u sedam. A dolaziš u devet.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.
Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home.
Eight o'clock, in Mira's living room at number 7. Lana sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
LanaMama! Rekla si u sedam!
Mum! You said seven!
MajaOprosti, Lana. Danas je bilo četrdeset pacijenata.
Sorry, Lana. There were forty patients today.
LanaČetrdeset pacijenata! A mene vidiš samo navečer.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
MiraSjedni, kćeri. Jedi. I liječnica mora jesti.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
MajaMama, nisam dijete. Imam četrdeset četiri godine!
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
MiraMoje si dijete. Moraš jesti.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
LanaMama, zašto si liječnica?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
MajaKad sam bila mala, kao ti, baka je bila učiteljica. Cijeli dan u školi.
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.

MajaNavečer je bila vrlo umorna, a ja tužna.
In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
MajaZato sam ja bila liječnica. Baka moja pacijentica, a lutka medicinska sestra.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
MiraDa. Recept je uvijek bio isti: čaj i krevet.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
MajaVolim kad je ljudima bolje. Zato sam liječnica.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
LanaA u subotu, tridesetog svibnja, pjevam s djecom! Dolaziš?
On Saturday, the thirtieth of May, I sing with the children! Are you coming?
MajaU subotu? U subotu radim do...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work until...
LanaMama! Uvijek radiš!
Mum! You're always working!
Maja looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Mira says nothing.

MajaDobro. U subotu ne radim. Svi idemo na festival: ti, ja, tata i tvoj brat.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your brother.
MiraA ja? Uvijek sam na festivalu. Sve vidim i sve znam.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
MiraA sada jedite, obje! Premršave ste.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.
Sve tri jedu palačinke. Maja je već na trećoj.
All three of them eat pancakes. Maja is already on her third.
