VesnaDobro jutro! Idete na festival?
Good morning! Off to the festival?
LanaDobro jutro, gospođo Vesna! Da. Večeras Luka svira prvi!
Good morning, Mrs Vesna! Yes. Tonight Luka is playing first!
VesnaMali Luka? Večeras? Uđite!
Little Luka? Tonight? Come in, come in!
Inside, the shop smells of wood and old paper. Mrs Vesna sits down behind her counter and takes off her glasses.
VesnaPoznajem malog Luku već dugo. Tada je imao deset godina.
I've known little Luka for a very long time. Back then he was ten.

VesnaLana, jesi li vidjela njegovu fotografiju? S trubom, na prozoru?
Lana, have you seen his photo? With the trumpet, at the window?
LanaJesam! I s groznom frizurom!
I have! And with a terrible haircut!
Tada je živio u broju sedam, zar ne?
He lived at number 7 then, didn't he?

VesnaDa. S mamom i tatom, na drugom katu. U Vašem stanu.
Yes. With his mum and dad, on the second floor. In your flat.
Znam. Luka mi je rekao.
I know. Luka told me.

VesnaNjegova mama i tata su mnogo radili. Cijeli dan, svaki dan.
His mum and dad worked a lot. All day, every day.
VesnaA poslije škole mali je Luka bio sam. Sam s trubom.
And after school little Luka was on his own. On his own with a trumpet.
LanaS trubom? Odakle mu truba?
With a trumpet? Where did he get a trumpet?
VesnaTruba je bila Mirina. Mala, stara truba. Mira mu ju je dala.
The trumpet was Mira's. A small, old trumpet. Mira gave it to him.
LanaBakina? A odakle baki truba?
Grandma's? And where did Grandma get a trumpet?
VesnaNe znam. Mira zna sve, a ja ne.
I don't know. Mira knows everything, and I don't.

VesnaSvaki dan je sjedio na stepenicama pod mojim prozorom i svirao.
Every day he sat on the steps under my window and played.
VesnaU početku je svirao vrlo loše. Vrlo glasno i vrlo loše!
At first he played very badly. Very loudly and very badly!
A Vi ste slušali? Svaki dan?
And you listened? Every day?
A Vi ste slušali? Svaki dan?
And you listened? Every day?
VesnaSlušala sam. Što sam mogla? Radila sam ovdje.
I listened. What could I do? I worked here.
VesnaPoslije je svirao bolje. A onda je došao gradski festival.
After a while he played better. And then came the town festival.
LanaI svirao je na festivalu?
And he played at the festival?
VesnaJe. Na trgu, s orkestrom. Prvi put.
He did. On the square, with the orchestra. For the first time.

VesnaU početku je bilo vrlo loše. Jako se bojao. Na trgu je bilo mnogo ljudi.
At first it was very bad. He was very frightened. There were lots of people on the square.
VesnaOrkestar je svirao jednu pjesmu, a mali Luka drugu. Pogrešnu!
The orchestra played one song, and little Luka another. The wrong one!
VesnaZatim je padala kiša. Jaka kiša! Mnogi su otišli kući.
Then it rained. It poured! And lots of people went home.
VesnaMali Luka je bio mokar i vrlo tužan. I on je želio kući.
Little Luka was wet and very sad. He wanted to go home too.
LanaA baka? Gdje je bila baka?
And Grandma? Where was Grandma?
VesnaMira je sjedila na klupi ispred pozornice. S kišobranom.
Mira was sitting on the bench in front of the stage. With an umbrella.
VesnaRekla je: "Luka, ne ideš kući! Sviraj!"
She said: 'Luka, you're not going home! Play!'
I svirao je?
And he played?

And he played?

VesnaJe. Po kiši. Istu pjesmu kao orkestar. I vrlo lijepo.
He did. In the rain. The same song as the orchestra. And very beautifully.
VesnaNapokon je kiša prestala, a ljudi su se vratili.
At last the rain stopped, and the people came back.
VesnaSvi smo slušali. A onda je cijeli trg pjevao.
We all listened. And then the whole square sang.
LanaJeste li i Vi pjevali, gospođo Vesna?
And did you sing, Mrs Vesna?
VesnaNaravno! Ja sam pjevala, Mira je pjevala, svi smo pjevali.
Of course! I sang, Mira sang, we all sang.
A njegova mama i tata? Jesu li bili tamo?
And his mum and dad? Were they there?

And his mum and dad? Were they there?
VesnaDošli su poslije posla, kasno. Ali čuli su posljednju pjesmu.
They came after work, late. But they heard the last song.

VesnaNjegov tata je bio vrlo sretan. Poslije su mu roditelji kupili novu, veliku trubu.
His dad was very happy. Afterwards his parents bought little Luka a new, big trumpet.
LanaA mala truba?
And the little trumpet?
VesnaMala je ostala kod Mire. Možda je još tamo. Tko zna?
The little one stayed with Mira. Maybe it's still there. Who knows?
LanaBaka zna. Baka zna sve!
Grandma knows. Grandma knows everything!
Mrs Vesna puts her glasses back on and looks out at the sunny street.
VesnaA danas će opet svirati na trgu. Kao prije osamnaest godina.
And today he'll play on the square again. Like eighteen years ago.
Hoćete li doći, gospođo Vesna?
Will you come, Mrs Vesna?
Hoćete li doći, gospođo Vesna?
Will you come, Mrs Vesna?
VesnaHoću. Sjedit ću pokraj Mire. Ako bude kiše, imam kišobran!
I'll come. I'll sit next to Mira. And if it rains, I've got an umbrella!

LanaI svi ćemo pjevati!
And we'll all sing!
