The storyA rainy Saturday in spring. Lana and her best friend Petra wanted to ride their bikes to the park, and her mother Maja is working again. So Lana spends the day at her grandmother's, talking about the summers at the sea, a puppy, and what she wants to be.

But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!

The landlady's phone rings. It is Maja, Lana's mother, calling from work.
MajaBok, Lana. Oprosti, danas opet radim. Do večeri.
Hi, Lana. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.

Opet? Mama, ti uvijek radiš! Čak i u subotu!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
- Maja
Znam. Ali moram pomagati ljudima. Pečete li baka i ti palačinke?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
- Lana
Da. Mama, dođi navečer! Ima mnogo palačinki.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.
U kuhinji Lana crta more, sunce i pijesak.
In the kitchen, Lana draws the sea, the sun and sand.
- Lana
Gledaj, bako! Svako ljeto cijela obitelj ide na more.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.

Tamo je vruće, a mama ne radi. S nama je cijeli dan!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!

Ujutro plivamo. More je hladnije od jezera, ali ne bojim se.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.

Znam plivati bolje od mame!
I can swim better than Mum!

A tvoj brat?
And your brother?

Još je premalen. Ne zna plivati. Samo jede pijesak!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!
LanaPoslije ručka gradimo dvorac od pijeska. Svako ljeto veći!
After lunch we build a sandcastle. A bigger one every summer!

Navečer je uz more vjetrovito. Zato mama uvijek kaže: "Lana, kapa! I jakna!"
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Lana, your hat! And your jacket!'
- Mira
Tvoja mama ima pravo. Navečer uz more treba topla odjeća.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.

Ali meni nikad nije hladno uz more!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
- Mira
Nikad? Prošle godine si bila plava kao more!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!
- Lana
Nisam! Dobro... samo malo.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Lana turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
- Lana
Bako, gledaj: štene! Kao Petrino. Jako želim štene!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Petra's. I really want a puppy!
- Mira
Štene? A Miki? Miki ne voli pse.
A puppy? And Miki? Miki doesn't like dogs.
- Lana
Miki živi ovdje. A štene može živjeti u našem stanu!
Miki lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
- Mira
A tko ga čuva? Tvoji roditelji rade, a ti si u školi.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.

Znam čuvati životinje! Svaki dan čuvam Mikija!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Miki every day!
- Mira
Ne, Lana. Miki čuva tebe.
No, Lana. Miki looks after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it. - Lana
Mama kaže: "Pas treba vrijeme, a ja nemam vremena."
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'

Točno. Mama mnogo radi i zato je umorna.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.
- Lana
Zato želim biti slikarica. Slikarica radi kod kuće i može čuvati štene!
That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
- Mira
Slikarica? Ne učiteljica, kao baka?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
- Lana
Ne! Učitelji uvijek kažu "kasnije".
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
- Mira
Ja nikad ne kažem "kasnije". Kažem "sada"!
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
- Lana
Bako, sunce! Mogu li sada biciklom?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?
MiraMožeš. Ali s kapom i šalom, jer je vani još hladno.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.

Petra! Sunce je! Dođi u park sa štenetom!
Petra! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Maja comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
- Lana
Mama! Ujutro kiša, pa sunce. A sada je Petrino štene moj prijatelj!
Mum! Rain in the morning, then sun. Petra's puppy is my friend now!
- Maja
I opet želiš štene, zar ne?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
- Lana
Da. Ali ljeti, uz more! Štenetu je tamo bolje nego u gradu.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
- Maja
Možda, Lana. Možda.
Maybe, Lana. Maybe.
Miki gleda štene u Laninom bloku. Uopće mu se ne sviđa.
Miki looks at the puppy in Lana's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
