The storyA rainy Saturday in spring. Eliška and her best friend Tereza wanted to ride their bikes to the park, and her mother Eva is working again. So Eliška spends the day at her grandmother's, talking about the summers at the sea, a puppy, and what she wants to be.

It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold.
Eliška sedí u okna. Je jí deset. Dnes není šťastná.
Eliška is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.

Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Tereza and I want to ride our bikes to the park!
Tereza je Eliščina nejlepší kamarádka ze školy. Má malé štěně.
Tereza is Eliška's best friend from school. She has a little puppy.
MarieNa kole? Dnes ne, Eliško. Je moc zima. A venku fouká.
By bike? Not today, Eliška. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.
EliškaAle mám pláštěnku! Nepotřebuju slunce!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!

Ty máš pláštěnku. Kolo ne.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.

Dnes můžeš kreslit nebo mi pomoct. Dělám palačinky.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Eva, Eliška's mother, calling from work.
EvaAhoj, Eliško. Promiň, dnes zase pracuju. Až do večera.
Hi, Eliška. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
- Eliška
Zase? Mami, pořád pracuješ! I v sobotu!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
- Eva
Já vím. Ale musím pomáhat lidem. Děláte s babičkou palačinky?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
- Eliška
Ano. Mami, přijď večer! Je hodně palačinek.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.
V kuchyni Eliška kreslí moře, slunce a písek.
In the kitchen, Eliška draws the sea, the sun and sand.

Podívej, babi! Každé léto jezdíme celá rodina k moři.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.

Je tam horko. A maminka nepracuje. Je s námi celý den!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!

Ráno plaveme. Moře je studenější než jezero. Ale nebojím se.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.

I can swim better than Mum!

Je ještě moc malý. Neumí plavat. Zatím jen jí písek!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!

When he is bigger, we will build a sandcastle after lunch. A bigger one every summer!

Večer u moře fouká. Maminka vždycky říká: Eliško, čepici! A bundu!
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Eliška, your hat! And your jacket!'

Maminka má pravdu. Večer u moře potřebuješ teplé oblečení.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.

Ale mně u moře nikdy není zima!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
- Marie
Nikdy? Loni jsi byla modrá jako moře!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!

Nebyla! No... Jen trochu.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Eliška turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
- Eliška
Babi, podívej! Štěně! Jako Terezino. Moc chci štěně!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Tereza's. I really want a puppy!
- Marie
Štěně? A Mourek? Nemá rád psy.
A puppy? And Mourek? Mourek doesn't like dogs.
- Eliška
Mourek bydlí tady. Štěně může bydlet u nás!
Mourek lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
- Marie
A kdo ho bude hlídat? Rodiče pracují a ty jsi ve škole.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.

Umím hlídat zvířata! Každý den hlídám Mourka!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Mourek every day!

Ne, Eliško. Mourek hlídá tebe.
No, Eliška. Mourek looks after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it. - Eliška
Maminka říká: pes potřebuje čas. A já nemám čas.
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'

Pravda. Tvoje maminka hodně pracuje. Proto je unavená.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.

Proto chci být malířka. Pracuje doma a může hlídat štěně!
That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
- Marie
Malířka? Ne učitelka, jako babička?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
- Eliška
Ne! Učitelky vždycky říkají později.
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
- Marie
Já nikdy neříkám později. Říkám hned!
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.

Babi, slunce! Můžu teď jet na kole?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?
MarieMůžeš. Ale s čepicí a šálou. Venku je ještě zima.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.

Terezo! Už je slunce! Přijď do parku se štěnětem!
Tereza! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Eva comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
- Eliška
Mami! Ráno pršelo, potom bylo slunce. A Terezino štěně je teď můj kamarád!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Tereza's puppy is my friend now!

A zase chceš štěně, že?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
- Eliška
Ano. Ale v létě u moře! Tam je štěněti líp než ve městě.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
- Eva
Možná, Eliško. Možná.
Maybe, Eliška. Maybe.
Mourek se dívá na štěně ve skicáku. Vůbec se mu nelíbí.
