Your suitcase is in the attic, where Karen put it. You take the old key from the raincoat ("Keep it," she said; now you know why) and climb the ladder from the top landing, past Mads's door; Freja follows. This is the X on her map, and there is a small round window, just big enough for a cat. Under the roof: buttons, a spare key, the computer mouse from the office, Thomas's pen, the candle "10", the toy thermometer, the mouthpiece. Whose is what, and when did it go? "Your flat was empty for a long time," says Freja. "It was his flat. And his things."
