Vijf uur 's ochtends. Iedereen in het huis slaapt.
Five in the morning. Everybody in the house is asleep.
Mieke slaapt, Max slaapt. Alleen Joost speelt boven nog, zacht.
Mieke is asleep, Max is asleep. Only Joost, upstairs, is still playing, very quietly.
Maar Sanne is al op. Ze is al in het café.
But Sanne is already up. She's already in the café.

Goedemorgen, mijn café! Tijd om te bakken.
Good morning, my café! Time to bake.
Sanne bakt brood en taart. In de koelkast: dertig eieren, veel melk en boter.
Sanne bakes bread and cake. In the fridge: thirty eggs, plenty of milk and butter.
In de oven: haar taart. Die is heel lekker.
In the oven: her apple cake. It's very good.
Om zes uur 's ochtends gaat de telefoon.
At six in the morning the phone rings.
Sanne
Hallo? Oma! Goedemorgen!
Hello? Grandma! Good morning!
Oma
Goedemorgen, Sanne! Bak je al?
Good morning, Sanne! Are you baking already?
Sanne
Ja, ik bak. En jij? Slaap je ook niet?
Yes, I'm baking. And you? Aren't you asleep either?
Oma
Nee. Ik bak ook. Wij slapen niet, wij bakken!
No. I'm baking too. We don't sleep, we bake!
De oma van Sanne woont in een dorp. Ze bakt elke ochtend brood.
Sanne's grandmother lives in a village. She bakes bread every morning.
Oma
Eet je, Sanne? Iedereen eet jouw taart. En jij?
Are you eating, Sanne? Everybody eats your cake. And you?
Sanne
Ik heb geen honger, oma. En ik heb geen tijd.
I'm not hungry, Grandma. And I don't have time.
Oma
Geen honger? Met honger ben je niet blij. Dat weet je.
Not hungry? When you are hungry, you are not happy. You know that.
Sanne
Ik weet het, ik weet het. Daarom krijgt iedereen in mijn café taart.
I know, I know. That's why everybody in my café gets cake.
Om zeven uur doet Sanne de deur open. Er staan al mensen te wachten.
At seven Sanne opens the door. People are already waiting there.
Sanne
Goedemorgen! Kom binnen, kom binnen!
Good morning! Come in, come in!
Joost komt binnen. Hij speelt de hele nacht en hij is heel moe.
Joost comes in first. He plays all night, and he's very tired.
Joost
Goedemorgen, Sanne... Thee, alsjeblieft. Alleen thee.
Morning, Sanne... Tea, please. Just tea.
Sanne
Goed, Joost. Je hebt geen honger, je bent moe. Hier is een grote kop thee.
All right, Joost. You're not hungry, you're tired. Here's a big cup of tea.
Sanne weet wat iedereen wil. Mieke vertelt haar alles.
Sanne knows what everybody wants. Mieke tells her everything.

Goedemorgen, mevrouw De Vries! Hoi, Emma! Wat willen jullie?
Good morning, Mrs De Vries! Hi, Emma! What would you two like?
Mevrouw De Vries
Voor mij zwarte thee, zonder suiker.
Black tea for me, no sugar.
Emma
En voor mij pannenkoeken! Tien pannenkoeken!
And pancakes for me! Ten pancakes!
Mevrouw De Vries
Emma! Geen tien. Twee.
Emma! Not ten. Two.
Sanne
Twee pannenkoeken met boter en een kop melk. En een kleine pannenkoek voor Max.
Two pancakes with butter and a cup of milk. And one small pancake for Max.
Max zit al op een stoel. Hij houdt van pannenkoeken.
Max is already sitting on a chair. He loves pancakes.
De klant
Koffie, alstublieft! Snel! Ik heb haast.
A coffee, please! Quickly! I'm in a hurry.
Sanne
Goedemorgen! Koffie met melk? Met suiker?
Good morning! Coffee with milk? With sugar?
De klant
Geen melk. Geen suiker. En geen taart! Ik heb geen honger.
No milk. No sugar. And no cake! I'm not hungry.
'Ik heb geen honger.' Dat vindt Sanne niet leuk.
"I'm not hungry." Sanne doesn't like that at all.
Sanne
U hebt geen honger? Maar u bent heel moe. Hier is uw koffie. En de taart krijgt u van mij.
You're not hungry? But you're very tired. Here's your coffee. And the cake is on me.
De klant
Nee, dank u! Ik heb geen tijd. Hoeveel kost de koffie?
No, thank you! I don't have time. How much is the coffee?
Sanne
Twee euro dertig. De taart kost niets.
Two euros thirty. The cake costs nothing.
De klant
Mmm... Heel lekker! Mag ik nog een stuk?
Mmm... I really like it! Can I have another one?
Sanne
Natuurlijk! Gaat u zitten, alstublieft.
Of course! Sit down, please.
En ze zit. En eet. En ze is niet meer moe.
And she sits. And eats. And she isn't tired any more.
Avond. Het café is leeg.
Evening. The café is empty.
Sanne
Vandaag tachtig mensen! En iedereen krijgt taart.
Eighty people today! And everybody gets cake.
De telefoon gaat weer. Sanne weet het al: het is oma.
The phone rings again. Sanne already knows: it's Grandma.
Oma
Nou, Sanne? Eet je?
Well, Sanne? Are you eating?
Sanne
Ja, oma! Ik eet nu. Brood met kaas en taart.
Yes, Grandma! I'm eating now. Bread with cheese, and cake.
En Max? Max eet ook. Vis, natuurlijk.
And Max? Max is eating too. Fish, of course.
Sanne
Welterusten, Max. Morgen weer om vijf uur!
Good night, Max. Tomorrow, five in the morning again!
