On maanantai, juhlan viikko. Lääkäri Leena on jo vastaanotolla. Hän tulee aina aikaisin.
Monday of festival week. Doctor Leena is already at the practice. She always comes in early.
LauraHuomenta, lääkäri! Neljäkymmentä potilasta tänään.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
LeenaNeljäkymmentä? No, olemme töissä seitsemään asti. Ensimmäinen potilas, kiitos!
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!

An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh. - Herra Laine
Hyvää päivää, lääkäri! Taas minä.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
LeenaAi, herra Laine! Olet täällä kahdesti viikossa. Miltä tuntuu?
Oh, Mr Laine! You're here twice a week. How do you feel?
- Herra Laine
Huonolta. Selkääni sattuu. Ja jalkaani. Ja päähäni.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
LeenaPäähänkin? Selvä. Hengitä syvään... Vielä kerran.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
- Herra Laine
Lääkäri, lapseni ovat kaukana. Kotona minulla on hyvin tylsää.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
LeenaEt ole sairas. Sinulla on vain tylsää.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.

LeenaTässä reseptini: joka aamu Sannan kahvilaan. Kahvia, kakkua ja ihmisiä.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Sanna's café. Coffee, cake and people.
- Herra Laine
Kakkua lääkkeeksi? Pidän tästä reseptistä kovasti!
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!
He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
LeenaLaura, hän ei tarvitse lääkettä. Hän tarvitsee ihmisiä.
Laura, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
- Opiskelija
Hyvää päivää. Päätäni särkee. Joka päivä.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
LeenaKuinka monta tuntia nukut?
How many hours do you sleep?
- Opiskelija
Neljä. Minulla on koe perjantaina, joten opiskelen yöllä.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.

LeenaNeljä? Liian vähän. Väsynyt pää ei opi mitään.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
LeenaNuku kahdeksan tuntia yössä ja juo paljon vettä.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
LauraLääkäri, et taas syö lounasta!
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!
LeenaMinulla ei ole aikaa, Laura. Ehkä myöhemmin.
I haven't got time, Laura. Maybe later.
LauraÄitisi soittaa. Kolmas kerta tänään. Mitä sanon hänelle?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
AinoLeena, et taas syö. Tiedän: Laura kertoo minulle kaiken.
Leena, you're not eating again. I know: Laura tells me everything.
AinoJa neljältä uusi naapurini tulee luoksesi. Hän on sairas.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
LeenaTiedän, äiti. Minäkin tiedän kaiken.
I know, Mum. I know everything too.
AinoEntä illalla? Ella kysyy, milloin tulet.
And this evening? Ella is asking when you're coming.
LeenaSeitsemältä, äiti. Sinun luoksesi.
At seven, Mum. To your place.

AinoSanot aina seitsemän. Ja tulet yhdeksältä.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.
Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home.
Eight o'clock, in Aino's living room at number 7. Ella sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
EllaÄiti! Sanoit seitsemän!
Mum! You said seven!
LeenaAnteeksi, Ella. Tänään oli neljäkymmentä potilasta.
Sorry, Ella. There were forty patients today.
EllaNeljäkymmentä potilasta! Ja minut näet vain illalla.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
AinoIstu, tyttöseni. Syö. Lääkärinkin täytyy syödä.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
LeenaÄiti, en ole lapsi. Olen neljäkymmentäneljä!
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
AinoOlet minun lapseni, ja sinun täytyy syödä.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
EllaÄiti, miksi olet lääkäri?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
LeenaOlin pienenä kuten sinä. Mummo oli opettaja. Hän oli koulussa koko päivän.
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.

LeenaIllalla hän oli hyvin väsynyt, ja minä olin surullinen.
In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
LeenaSitten olin lääkäri. Mummo oli potilaani ja nukkeni sairaanhoitaja.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
AinoNiin. Ja resepti oli aina sama: teetä ja sänkyyn.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
LeenaPidän siitä, että ihmiset voivat paremmin. Siksi olen lääkäri.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
EllaJa lauantaina laulan lasten kanssa! Tuletko?
And on Saturday I am singing with the children! Are you coming?
LeenaLauantaina? Lauantaina olen töissä...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work…
EllaÄiti! Olet aina töissä!
Mum! You're always working!
Leena looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Aino says nothing.

LeenaSelvä. Lauantaina en ole töissä. Tulemme kaikki juhlaan: sinä, minä, isä ja veljesi.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your brother.
AinoEntä minä? Olen aina juhlassa. Näen kaiken ja tiedän kaiken.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
AinoJa nyt syökää molemmat! Olette liian laihoja.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.
Kaikki kolme syövät lettuja. Leena syö jo kolmatta.
All three of them eat pancakes. Leena is already on her third.
