Saturday evening, under the roof of number 7. Jussi's flat is small: a bed, a table, a chair, a lot of sheet music, and the trumpet.
On ilta. Jussi asuu ylhäällä. Asunto on pieni mutta mukava. Pöydällä on trumpetti. Sängyllä on Nöpö.
Evening. Jussi lives upstairs. His flat is small, but nice. On the table: the trumpet. On the bed: Nöpö.
Jussi
Hyvää iltaa, Nöpö! Onko sinulla nälkä?
Good evening, Nöpö! Are you hungry?
His phone rings. On the screen it says: Mama.
Äiti soittaa. Hän asuu kaukana.
It's his mum calling. She lives far away.
Jussi
Haloo? Ai, äiti! Hyvää iltaa!
Hello? Oh, Mum! Good evening!
Äiti
Hei, Jussi! Mitä kuuluu?
Hi, Jussi! How are you?
Jussi
Hyvää, kiitos. Entä sinulle?
Fine, thanks. And you?
Äiti
Ei kovin hyvää. Asut kaukana, ja minä olen täällä yksin.
Not great. You live far away, and I'm here on my own.
Äiti
Oletko nyt töissä?
Are you working at the moment?
Jussi
Kyllä, äiti. Soitan. Olen muusikko.
Yes, Mum. I play. I'm a musician.
Äiti
Muusikko! Se ei ole työ. Tarvitset oikean työn.
A musician! That's not a job. You need a real job.
Äiti
Ystäväsi Pauli on insinööri. Hänen äitinsä on hyvin iloinen.
Your friend Pauli is an engineer. His mum is very happy.
Jussi
Äiti, minäkin olen iloinen.
Mum, I'm happy too.
Äiti
Onko sinulla pöytä? Sänky? Sohva?
And do you have a table? A bed? A sofa?
Jussi
Minulla on pöytä ja sänky. Nyt minulla ei ole sohvaa.
I have a table and a bed. I don't have a sofa at the moment.
Äiti
Ei sohvaa? Miksi? Missä se on?
You don't have a sofa? Why? Where is it?
Jussi
Naapurin kylpyhuoneessa.
It's in my neighbour's bathroom.
Äiti
Kylpyhuoneessa?! Voi Jussi, Jussi...
In the bathroom?! Oh, Jussi, Jussi...
Jussi
Kaikki on hyvin, äiti. Hyvää yötä!
It's fine, Mum. Good night!
He puts the phone down and looks at the trumpet for a long time.
Jussi
Oikea työ... Nöpö, sinullakaan ei ole työtä.
A real job... Nöpö, you don't have a job either.
Nöpö nukkuu. Se on täällä pomo. Se ei tarvitse työtä.
Nöpö is asleep. He's the boss here. He doesn't need a job.
A knock. Two friends come in: Emil with a double bass in a big case, and Iida with a small drum under her arm.
Joku avaa oven. Emil ja Iida, Jussin ystävät, tulevat.
Somebody opens the door. It's Emil and Iida, Jussi's friends.
Emil
Hei, Jussi! Olemme täällä!
Hi, Jussi! We're here!
Jussi
Hei! Tulkaa sisään! Onko teillä nälkä?
Hi! Come in! Are you hungry?
Iida
On, kova nälkä. Mutta ensin musiikkia!
Yes, very. But first: music!
Jussi, Emil ja Iida ovat bändi. He soittavat illalla ja yöllä.
Jussi, Emil and Iida are a band. They play in the evening and at night.
Jussi
Ystävät, minulla on uusi laulu.
Friends, I've got a new song.
Jussi soittaa. Emil ja Iida istuvat sängyllä ja katsovat.
Jussi plays. Emil and Iida sit on the bed and watch.
Iida
Jussi, tuo on oikein hyvä laulu!
Jussi, that's a really good song!
Jussi
Shh! Ei niin kovaa. Alakerran naapurit nukkuvat.
Shh! Not so loud. The neighbours downstairs are asleep.
Emil
Naapurit? Keitä he ovat?
The neighbours? Who are they?
Jussi
Aino, Sanna... Ja uusi naapuri. Saksalainen Hampurista.
Aino, Sanna... And the new neighbour. German, from Hamburg.
Iida
Saksalainen? Puhuuko hän suomea?
German? Do they speak Finnish?
Jussi
Vähän. Ja hän on insinöörikin.
A little. And an engineer, too.
Emil
Insinööri! Hänen äitinsä on varmasti hyvin iloinen.
An engineer! Their mum must be really happy.
Iida
Jussi, mikä on unelmasi?
Jussi, and what's your dream?
Jussi
Unelmani on iso bändi. Soitamme joka ilta, ja kaikki ovat iloisia.
My dream is a big band. We play every evening, and everyone is happy.
Emil
Entä äitisi? Mitä hän sanoo?
And your mum? What does she say?
Jussi
Äiti sanoo: tarvitset oikean työn. Mutta olen iloinen.
Mum says: you need a real job. But I'm happy.
Iida
Mekin olemme iloisia. Soitetaan!
We're happy too. Let's play!
Midnight. Downstairs a light goes on, and somebody comes up the stairs in slippers.
Anteeksi... Soitatteko? Nyt? On keskiyö!
Excuse me... You're playing? Now? It's midnight!
Anteeksi... Soitatteko? Nyt? On keskiyö!
Excuse me... You're playing? Now? It's midnight!
Jussi
Ai, anteeksi! Emme soita enää!
Oh, sorry! We've stopped playing!
Ja Nöpö nukkuu sängyllä. Se pitää musiikista kovasti.
And Nöpö sleeps on the bed. He likes the music very much.
