The day after the party. Aino's living room smells of strong black tea.
Aino, Ella ja sinä istutte olohuoneessa. Seinällä on Ainon koko perhe.
Aino, Ella and you are sitting in the living room. On the wall: Aino's whole family.
Entä missä Jussin kuva on?
And where's Jussi's photo?
Entä missä Jussin kuva on?
And where's Jussi's photo?
Aino
Nyt se on pöydällä. Ei seinään päin.
It's on the table now. Not facing the wall.
Ella points at an old black-and-white photo of a young woman in front of a green door.
Ella
Mummo, kuka tuo nuori nainen on?
Grandma, who's that young woman?
Aino
Minä! Olin tässä nuori. Kaksikymmentäkaksi.
That's me! I was young here. I was twenty-two.
Ella
Sinä? Olit hyvin kaunis!
You? You were very beautiful!
Aino
Olin. Ja olen vieläkin!
I was. And I still am!
Entä kuka tuo pitkä mies on?
And who's that tall man?
Entä kuka tuo pitkä mies on?
And who's that tall man?
Aino
Mieheni. Ella, hän on isoisäsi.
My husband. Ella, that's your grandfather.
Ella
Isoisä ei ollut enää täällä, kun olin vauva.
Grandpa was no longer here when I was a baby.
Aino
Niin. Hän oli hyvin hyvä ja ystävällinen ihminen. Kuten sinä, Ella.
Yes. He was a very good, friendly man. Like you, Ella.
Missä olitte tässä?
Where were you here?
Missä olitte tässä?
Where were you here?
Aino
Joen luona. Oli elokuu. Olimme nuoria ja iloisia.
By the river. It was August. We were young and happy.
The next photo shows an old house with a green door and dark, empty windows.
Aino
Ja tässä on numero seitsemän. Se oli hyvin vanha ja tyhjä.
And this is number 7. It was very old and empty.
Tyhjä? Kuten asuntoni ensimmäisenä päivänä!
Empty? Like my flat on the first day!
Tyhjä? Kuten asuntoni ensimmäisenä päivänä!
Empty? Like my flat on the first day!
Aino
Se oli mieheni vanhempien talo.
It was my husband's parents' house.
Aino
Hänen vanhempansa olivat vanhoja, ja talo oli heille liian iso.
His parents were old, and the house was too big for them.
Aino
Meille se ei ollut liian iso. Nyt se on minun. Jo viisikymmentä vuotta.
Not too big for us. Now it's mine. For fifty years now.
Ella
Viisikymmentä vuotta? Kuten äidin veli!
Fifty years? Like my mum's brother!
On the next photo: a school yard full of children, and at the side, a young teacher.
Entä tässä? Paljon lapsia!
And here? So many children!
Entä tässä? Paljon lapsia!
And here? So many children!
Aino
Tämä on kouluni. Olin opettaja. Neljäkymmentä vuotta!
This is my school. I was a teacher. For forty years!
Ovatko he siis kaikki lapsiasi?
So they're all your children?
Ovatko he siis kaikki lapsiasi?
So they're all your children?
Aino
Eivät minun, vaan koulun lapset. Mutta he olivat kaikki minun. Puoli kaupunkia!
Not mine, the school's children. But they were all mine. Half the town!
Ella
Entä äitini?
And my mum?
Aino
Kyllä. Olin hänen opettajansa. Hän oli hyvin hyvä... ja hyvin äänekäs.
Yes. I was her teacher. She was very good... and very loud.
A small colour photo: a girl of seven with long light-brown hair and a big smile.
Aino
Ja tässä on Leena. Hän on tässä seitsemän.
And this is Leena. She's seven here.
Ella
Äiti! Hän on niin pieni! Hänellä on pitkät hiukset ja siniset silmät.
Mum! She's so small! She has long hair and blue eyes.
Aino
Siniset silmät, kuten minulla. Hän on syntynyt täällä numerossa seitsemän.
Blue eyes, like me. She was born here, at number 7.
Ella
Ja minä olen syntynyt kahdeskymmeneskahdeksas maaliskuuta!
And I was born on the twenty-eighth of March!
Aino
Ja tässä on poikani. Hän on tässä viisi.
And this is my son. He's five here.
Hänellä on iso kakku!
He's got a big cake!
Hänellä on iso kakku!
He's got a big cake!
Aino
Kyllä. Hänellä oli aina nälkä. Kuten sinulla!
Yes. He was always hungry. Like you!
Minullako? Minulla ei ole nälkä!
Me? I'm not hungry!
Minullako? Minulla ei ole nälkä!
Me? I'm not hungry!
Aino takes two small photos out of her cardigan pocket.
Aino
Ella, tämä on sinulle. Isoisäsi ja minä joen luona.
Ella, this is for you. Your grandpa and me, by the river.
Ella
Minulle? Kiitos, mummo!
For me? Thank you, Grandma!
Aino
Ja tämä on sinulle. Numero seitsemän tyhjänä.
And this is for you. Number 7, when it was empty.
Aino
Entä sinä? Missä olit, kun olit kymmenen?
And you? Where were you when you were ten?
Hampurissa. Olen syntynyt Hampurissa, ja vanhempani ovat yhä siellä.
In Hamburg. I was born in Hamburg, and my parents are still there.

In Hamburg. I was born in Hamburg, and my parents are still there.
Nöpö jumps onto the shelf and sits down in front of the wall, between the photos.
Ella
Mummo, entä missä Nöpön kuva on?
Grandma, and where's Nöpö's photo?
Aino
Nöpön? Se ei ole minun kissani!
Nöpö's? He's not my cat!
Ella
Mutta se on aina täällä. Sekin on perhettä!
But he's always here. He's family too!
Aino
No niin. Ella, voitko piirtää Nöpön?
Oh, all right. Ella, could you draw Nöpö?
Ella
Voin! Uuteen piirustuskirjaani!
I can! In my new sketchbook!
That evening, a bright yellow page hangs among the old photos.
Nyt Ainon koko perhe on seinällä. Ja Nöpö.
Now Aino's whole family is on the wall. And Nöpö.
