A Saturday morning in spring at Aino's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
On lauantai. Ulkona sataa ja on hyvin kylmä. Ella istuu ikkunan luona. Hän on kymmenen. Tänään hän ei ole iloinen.
It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold. Ella is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.
EllaMummo, miksi taas sataa? Tänään Emma ja minä haluamme pyöräillä puistoon!
Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Emma and I want to ride our bikes to the park!
Emma on Ellan paras koulukaveri. Hänellä on pieni koiranpentu.
Emma is Ella's best friend from school. She has a little puppy.
AinoPyörällä? Ei tänään, Ella. On liian kylmä. Ja ulkona tuulee.
By bike? Not today, Ella. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.
EllaMutta minulla on sadetakki! En tarvitse aurinkoa!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!
- Aino
Sinulla on sadetakki. Mutta pyörällä ei ole.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.
- Aino
Tänään voit piirtää tai auttaa minua. Teen lettuja.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Leena, Ella's mother, calling from work.
LeenaHei, Ella. Anteeksi, olen tänäänkin töissä. Iltaan asti.
Hi, Ella. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
- Ella
Taas? Äiti, olet aina töissä! Lauantainakin!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
- Leena
Tiedän. Mutta minun täytyy auttaa ihmisiä. Teettekö mummon kanssa lettuja?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
- Ella
Kyllä. Äiti, tule illalla! Lettuja on paljon.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.
Keittiössä Ella piirtää meren, auringon ja hiekkaa.
In the kitchen, Ella draws the sea, the sun and sand.
- Ella
Katso, mummo! Joka kesä koko perhe menee merelle.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.
- Ella
Siellä on kuuma, eikä äiti ole töissä. Hän on kanssamme koko päivän!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!
- Ella
Aamulla uimme. Meri on kylmempi kuin järvi, mutta en pelkää.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.
- Ella
Osaan uida paremmin kuin äiti!
I can swim better than Mum!
- Aino
Entä veljesi?
And your brother?
- Ella
Hän on vielä liian pieni. Hän ei osaa uida. Hän vain syö hiekkaa!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!
EllaLounaan jälkeen teemme hiekkalinnan. Joka kesä isomman!
After lunch we build a sandcastle. A bigger one every summer!
- Ella
Illalla merellä tuulee, joten äiti sanoo aina: Ella, hattu! Ja takki!
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Ella, your hat! And your jacket!'
- Aino
Äitisi on oikeassa. Illalla merellä tarvitset lämpimiä vaatteita.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.
- Ella
Mutta minulla ei ole koskaan kylmä merellä!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
- Aino
Ei koskaan? Viime vuonna olit sininen kuin meri!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!
- Ella
En ollut! No... vain vähän.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Ella turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
- Ella
Mummo, katso: koiranpentu! Kuten Emman. Haluan todella koiranpennun!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Emma's. I really want a puppy!
- Aino
Koiranpentu? Entä Nöpö? Nöpö ei pidä koirista.
A puppy? And Nöpö? Nöpö doesn't like dogs.
- Ella
Nöpö asuu täällä. Koira voi asua asunnossamme!
Nöpö lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
- Aino
Entä kuka vahtii sitä? Vanhempasi ovat töissä ja sinä koulussa.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.
- Ella
Osaan vahtia eläimiä! Vahdin Nöpöä joka päivä!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Nöpö every day!
- Aino
Ei, Ella. Nöpö vahtii sinua.
No, Ella. Nöpö looks after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
- Ella
Äiti sanoo: koira tarvitsee aikaa, eikä minulla ole aikaa.
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'
- Aino
Se on totta. Äitisi on paljon töissä, siksi hän on väsynyt.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.
- Ella
Siksi haluan olla taiteilija. Taiteilija on töissä kotona ja voi vahtia koiraa!
That's why I want to be a artist. A artist works at home and can look after a puppy!
- Aino
Taiteilija? Ei opettaja, kuten mummo?
A artist? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
- Ella
Ei! Opettajat sanovat aina myöhemmin.
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
- Aino
En koskaan sano myöhemmin. Sanon nyt!
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
- Ella
Mummo, aurinko! Saanko nyt ajaa pyörällä?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?
AinoSaat. Mutta hattu ja huivi päälle, koska ulkona on vielä kylmä.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.
On her grandmother's phone.
EllaEmma! Aurinko paistaa! Tule puistoon koiranpennun kanssa!
Emma! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Leena comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
- Ella
Äiti! Aamulla satoi, sitten paistoi aurinko. Ja Emman koira on nyt ystäväni!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Emma's puppy is my friend now!
- Leena
Ja haluat taas koiranpennun, eikö niin?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
- Ella
Kyllä. Mutta kesällä merellä! Siellä koiralla on parempi olla kuin kaupungissa.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
- Leena
Ehkä, Ella. Ehkä.
Maybe, Ella. Maybe.
Nöpö katsoo koiraa Ellan piirustuskirjassa. Se ei pidä siitä yhtään.
Nöpö looks at the puppy in Ella's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
