Saturday morning, the day of the festival. The sun is out. On the way to the market square, you and Ella pass the old toy and gift shop. Mrs Helena is standing in the doorway.
Helena
Huomenta! Oletteko menossa juhlaan?
Good morning! Off to the festival?
Ella
Huomenta, Helena! Kyllä. Tänään illalla Jussi soittaa ensin!
Good morning, Mrs Helena! Yes. Tonight Jussi is playing first!
Helena
Pieni Jussi? Tänään? Tulkaa sisään!
Little Jussi? Tonight? Come in, come in!
Inside, the shop smells of wood and old paper. Mrs Helena sits down behind her counter and takes off her glasses.
Helena
Tunnen pienen Jussin hyvin pitkältä ajalta. Silloin hän oli kymmenen.
I've known little Jussi for a very long time. Back then he was ten.
Helena
Ella, oletko nähnyt hänen kuvansa? Trumpetti ja ikkuna?
Ella, have you seen his photo? With the trumpet, at the window?
Ella
Olen! Ja kamala tukka!
I have! And with a terrible haircut!
Hän asui silloin numerossa seitsemän, eikö niin?
He lived at number 7 then, didn't he?
Hän asui silloin numerossa seitsemän, eikö niin?
He lived at number 7 then, didn't he?
Helena
Kyllä. Äidin ja isän kanssa toisessa kerroksessa. Sinun asunnossasi.
Yes. With his mum and dad, on the second floor. In your flat.
Tiedän. Jussi kertoi.
I know. Jussi told me.
Tiedän. Jussi kertoi.
I know. Jussi told me.
Helena
Hänen äitinsä ja isänsä olivat paljon töissä. Koko päivän, joka päivä.
His mum and dad worked a lot. All day, every day.
Helena
Ja koulun jälkeen pieni Jussi oli yksin. Yksin trumpetin kanssa.
And after school little Jussi was on his own. On his own with a trumpet.
Ella
Trumpetin? Mistä hän sai trumpetin?
With a trumpet? Where did he get a trumpet?
Helena
Trumpetti oli Ainon. Pieni vanha trumpetti. Aino antoi sen hänelle.
The trumpet was Aino's. A small, old trumpet. Aino gave it to him.
Ella
Mummon? Entä mistä mummo sai trumpetin?
Grandma's? And where did Grandma get a trumpet?
Helena
En tiedä. Aino tietää kaiken, minä en.
I don't know. Aino knows everything, and I don't.
Helena
Joka päivä hän istui portailla ikkunani alla ja soitti.
Every day he sat on the steps under my window and played.
Helena
Ensin hän soitti hyvin huonosti. Hyvin kovaa ja hyvin huonosti!
At first he played very badly. Very loudly and very badly!
Ja kuuntelit? Joka päivä?
And you listened? Every day?
Ja kuuntelit? Joka päivä?
And you listened? Every day?
Helena
Kuuntelin. Mitä muuta voin tehdä? Olin täällä töissä.
I listened. What else can I do? I worked here.
Helena
Sitten hän soitti paremmin. Ja sitten tuli kaupunkijuhla.
After a while he played better. And then came the town festival.
Ella
Ja hän soitti juhlassa?
And he played at the festival?
Helena
Kyllä. Aukiolla orkesterin kanssa. Ensimmäistä kertaa.
He did. On the square, with the orchestra. For the first time.
Helena
Ensin se oli hyvin huonoa. Hän pelkäsi kovasti. Aukiolla oli paljon ihmisiä.
At first it was very bad. He was very frightened. There were lots of people on the square.
Helena
Orkesteri soitti yhden laulun ja pieni Jussi toisen. Väärän!
The orchestra played one song, and little Jussi another. The wrong one!
Helena
Sitten satoi. Paljon! Monet menivät kotiin.
Then it rained. It poured! And lots of people went home.
Helena
Pieni Jussi oli märkä ja hyvin surullinen. Hänkin halusi kotiin.
Little Jussi was wet and very sad. He wanted to go home too.
Ella
Entä mummo? Missä mummo oli?
And Grandma? Where was Grandma?
Helena
Aino istui penkillä lavan edessä. Sateenvarjon kanssa.
Aino was sitting on the bench in front of the stage. With an umbrella.
Helena
Hän sanoi: Jussi, et mene kotiin! Soita!
She said: 'Jussi, you're not going home! Play!'
Ja hän soitti?
And he played?
Ja hän soitti?
And he played?
Helena
Soitti. Sateessa. Saman laulun kuin orkesteri. Ja hyvin kauniisti.
He did. In the rain. The same song as the orchestra. And very beautifully.
Helena
Lopulta sade loppui ja ihmiset tulivat takaisin.
At last the rain stopped, and the people came back.
Helena
Kuuntelimme kaikki. Sitten koko aukio lauloi.
We all listened. And then the whole square sang.
Ella
Ja lauloitko sinäkin, Helena?
And did you sing, Mrs Helena?
Helena
Tietysti! Minä lauloin, Aino lauloi, kaikki lauloimme.
Of course! I sang, Aino sang, we all sang.
Entä hänen äitinsä ja isänsä? Olivatko he siellä?
And his mum and dad? Were they there?
Entä hänen äitinsä ja isänsä? Olivatko he siellä?
And his mum and dad? Were they there?
Helena
He tulivat töiden jälkeen, myöhään. Mutta he kuulivat viimeisen laulun.
They came after work, late. But they heard the last song.
Helena
Isä oli hyvin iloinen. Sitten vanhemmat ostivat Jussille uuden ison trumpetin.
His dad was very happy. Afterwards his parents bought little Jussi a new, big trumpet.
Ella
Entä pieni trumpetti?
And the little trumpet?
Helena
Pieni jäi Ainolle. Ehkä se on vielä siellä. Kuka tietää?
The little one stayed with Aino. Maybe it's still there. Who knows?
Ella
Mummo tietää. Mummo tietää kaiken!
Grandma knows. Grandma knows everything!
Mrs Helena puts her glasses back on and looks out at the sunny street.
Helena
Ja tänään hän soittaa taas aukiolla. Kuten kahdeksantoista vuotta sitten.
And today he'll play on the square again. Like eighteen years ago.
Tuletko, Helena?
Will you come, Mrs Helena?
Tuletko, Helena?
Will you come, Mrs Helena?
Helena
Tulen. Istun Ainon vieressä. Ja jos sataa, minulla on sateenvarjo!
I'll come. I'll sit next to Aino. And if it rains, I've got an umbrella!
Ella
Ja me kaikki laulamme!
And we'll all sing!
