LauraBonjour, docteur ! Quarante patients aujourd’hui.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
AnneQuarante ? Bon, nous travaillons jusqu’à sept heures. Premier patient, s’il vous plaît !
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!

An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh. - Monsieur Durand
Bonjour, docteur ! C’est encore moi.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
AnneOh, monsieur Durand ! Vous êtes ici deux fois par semaine. Comment est-ce que vous vous sentez ?
Oh, Mr Durand! You're here twice a week. How do you feel?
- Monsieur Durand
Mal. J’ai mal au dos. Et à la jambe. Et à la tête.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
AnneÀ la tête aussi ? D’accord. Respirez profondément... Encore une fois.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
- Monsieur Durand
Docteur, mes enfants sont loin. À la maison, je m’ennuie beaucoup.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
AnneVous n’êtes pas malade. Vous vous ennuyez seulement.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Claire's café. Coffee, cake and people.
- Monsieur Durand
Du gâteau comme médicament ? J’aime beaucoup cette ordonnance !
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!

He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
Laura, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
- L’étudiant
Bonjour. J’ai mal à la tête. Tous les jours.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
AnneVous dormez combien d’heures ?
How many hours do you sleep?
- L’étudiant
Quatre.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.
AnneQuatre ? C’est trop peu. Une tête fatiguée n’apprend rien.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
LauraDocteur, vous ne déjeunez pas encore !
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!

AnneJe n’ai pas le temps, Laura. Peut-être plus tard.
I haven't got time, Laura. Maybe later.
LauraVotre mère est au téléphone. La troisième fois aujourd’hui. Qu’est-ce que je lui dis ?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
MadeleineAnne, tu ne manges pas encore. Je sais : Laura me dit tout.
Anne, you're not eating again. I know: Laura tells me everything.
MadeleineEt à quatre heures, mon nouveau voisin vient te voir. Il est malade.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
MadeleineEt à quatre heures, ma nouvelle voisine vient te voir. Elle est malade.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.

I know, Mum. I know everything too.
MadeleineEt ce soir ? Zoé demande quand tu viens.
And this evening? Zoé is asking when you're coming.
AnneÀ sept heures, maman. Chez toi.
At seven, Mum. To your place.
MadeleineTu dis toujours sept heures. Et tu arrives à neuf heures.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.

Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home. Eight o'clock, in Madeleine Martin's living room at number 7. Zoé sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
ZoéMaman ! Tu as dit sept heures !
Mum! You said seven!
AnnePardon, Zoé. Il y a eu quarante patients aujourd’hui.
Sorry, Zoé. There were forty patients today.
ZoéQuarante patients ! Et moi, tu me vois seulement le soir.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
MadeleineAssieds-toi, ma fille. Mange. Un docteur doit manger aussi.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
AnneMaman, je ne suis pas une enfant. J’ai quarante-quatre ans !
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
MadeleineTu es mon enfant, et tu as besoin de manger.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
ZoéMaman, pourquoi est-ce que tu es docteur ?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.

In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
AnneAlors, j’étais le docteur. Mamie était ma patiente, et ma poupée était l’infirmière.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
MadeleineOui.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
And on Saturday, the eighteenth of April, I'm singing with the children! Are you coming?
AnneSamedi ? Samedi, je travaille jusqu’à...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work until...
ZoéMaman ! Tu travailles toujours !
Mum! You're always working!
Anne looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Madeleine says nothing.
AnneD’accord.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your little brother.

MadeleineEt moi ? Je suis toujours au festival. Je vois tout et je sais tout.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
MadeleineEt maintenant, mangez, toutes les deux ! Vous êtes trop maigres.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.

All three of them eat pancakes. Anne is already on her third.
