Unit 4 · Read what is written · Read
Read what is written
Expect complete vowels, consonant clusters and weak stress.
Follow the rhythm of the whole word, not a strong stress
No tones, weak stress
Georgian has no lexical tones and no vowel-length spelling contrast. Stress is weak and is not a word-by-word accent-learning task as in Russian.
Follow the natural rhythm of whole-word audio, such as father and fox, rather than forcing English or German stress onto it.
მამა
father
მელა
fox
სკამი
sk’ami, chair: no vowel between ს and კ
Read the consonants you see
Georgian spelling is highly regular: read the consonants you see and do not add a helper vowel. სკამი, chair, and წყალი, water, start with two consonants together.
სკამი
chair
წყალი
water
მწვრთნელი
mts’vrtneli, coach: six consonants in a row
A long cluster preview
The long cluster in მწვრთნელი, coach, is an advanced preview, not an early reading requirement.
