- Laura
Hier ist ein Brötchen für Sie.
Here is a bread roll for you.
KatrinDanke, Frau Berger. Ich esse später. Bitte den ersten Patienten!
Thank you, Ms Berger. I will eat later. The first patient, please!
Herr Otto comes in very slowly on his walking stick. Katrin gets up to greet him.
Der erste Patient ist Herr Otto. Er ist achtzig und kommt jeden Montag.
The first patient is Mr Otto. He is eighty and comes every Monday.
- Herr Otto
Guten Morgen, Frau Doktor! Heute tut mir alles weh. Der Rücken, das Bein, der Kopf …
Good morning, Doctor! Everything hurts today. My back, my leg, my head …
- Katrin
Setzen Sie sich, Herr Otto. Seit wann haben Sie die Schmerzen?
Sit down, Mr Otto. Since when have you had the pain?
- Herr Otto
Seit Samstag. Am Wochenende bin ich immer allein. Meine Tochter wohnt in Berlin.
Since Saturday. At the weekend I am always alone. My daughter lives in Berlin.
- Katrin
Ihr Rücken ist nicht krank, Herr Otto. Sie sind allein, und das tut weh.
Your back is not ill, Mr Otto. You are alone, and that hurts.
Katrin writes a prescription, and Herr Otto laughs.
KatrinHier ist Ihr Rezept: Jeden Morgen um zehn gehen Sie in Gretas Café. Kaffee, Kuchen und Leute!
Here is your prescription: every morning at ten you go to Greta's café. Coffee, cake and people!
- Herr Otto
Kuchen auf Rezept? Das gefällt mir!
Cake on prescription? I like that!
- Katrin
Und Sie müssen nicht jeden Montag kommen. Aber Sie dürfen.
And you don't have to come every Monday. But you may.
Nora looks very tired. Katrin counts on her fingers.
At eleven Nora comes. She is a student, and she is very tired.
- Nora
Ich habe jeden Tag Kopfschmerzen. Am Freitag habe ich eine Prüfung.
I have a headache every day. I have an exam on Friday.
- Katrin
Und wie viele Stunden schlafen Sie?
And how many hours do you sleep?
- Nora
Vier. Nachts lerne ich.
Four. I study at night.
- Katrin
Vier? Das ist zu wenig. Ein müder Kopf lernt nichts. Sie sollen acht Stunden schlafen.
Four? That is too little. A tired head learns nothing. You should sleep for eight hours.
- Nora
Acht! Und Sie, Frau Doktor? Schlafen Sie acht Stunden?
Eight! And you, Doctor? Do you sleep for eight hours?
She laughs.
Here we are talking about you, not about me.
Lunchtime. Katrin is on the phone, next to a cold cup of tea and a sandwich.
Hilde ruft an.

At seven. Tell her: at seven.
- Hilde
Du sagst immer sieben. Und dann kommst du um neun.
You always say seven. And then you come at nine.
Evening in Hilde's living room. Katrin talks about her day, and Lotte listens.
Half past eight, at Hilde's. Katrin is there: not at seven, but not at nine either.
- Katrin
Vierzig Patienten heute! Und Herr Otto bekommt jetzt jeden Morgen Kuchen. Auf Rezept!

- Katrin
Na ja … Das Brötchen ist noch in der Praxis.
Well … The bread roll is still at the practice.
- Hilde
You see, Lotte? Your mum is a good doctor, but a bad patient.
Lotte, in a white coat much too big for her, listens to her mother's back.
Now Lotte is the doctor, and Mum is the patient.
- Lotte
Frau Vogel, bitte! Was tut Ihnen weh?
Mrs Vogel, please! What hurts?
- Katrin
Mir tut der Rücken weh. Und mir tun die Füße weh.

- Katrin
Aber Frau Doktor, am Samstag habe ich Patienten!
But Doctor, I have patients on Saturday!
- Lotte
Die sollen auch zum Fest kommen. Kaffee, Kuchen und Leute!
They should come to the festival too. Coffee, cake and people!
Lotte hugs her mother, and Hilde puts another pancake on Katrin's plate.
KatrinGut, Frau Doktor.
All right, Doctor. On Saturday I am not working. We are all coming: you, me, Dad and your brother.
- Hilde
Und ich komme natürlich auch. Hier, noch ein Pfannkuchen. Ihr seid zu dünn, ihr zwei!
And of course I am coming too. Here, another pancake. You are too thin, you two!
Nine o'clock. Katrin is asleep on the sofa, and Lotte puts a finger to her lips.
