Some verbs use sein as the helper

Common verbs describing a journey to another place or a change use sein in the Perfekt: Ich bin gegangen, Sie ist gekommen, Das Licht ist ausgegangen. Learn the helper with the participle. bleiben also uses sein: Er ist zu Hause geblieben.

Match sein to the subject

The helper uses the present forms you know: ich bin, du bist, er ist / sie ist / es ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie sind / Sie sind. The participle stays the same: Wir sind nach Hause gegangen. A time phrase may come first: Danach sind wir nach Hause gegangen.

Choose the helper for the particular verb

Not every physical action uses sein. spielen, tanzen and arbeiten use haben in the everyday examples here: Ich habe getanzt. For fahren, this unit uses journeys with sein: Ich bin mit dem Bus gefahren. Learn other uses later.

war and hatte remain useful

For a past description, use war and hatte naturally: Es war dunkel, Ich hatte Hunger. The Perfekt describes the events around it: Das Licht ist ausgegangen. Both patterns can appear in one account.
