  • Adjective endings – consolidated

The whole system: weak, mixed, strong

When an adjective stands before a noun, it takes an adjective ending. The ending depends on article, case, gender and number.

There are three patterns depending on which article precedes:

  1. Weak declension — after the definite article (der, die, das): mostly -e or -en: der nette Mann die alten Häuser.
  1. Mixed declension — after ein-, kein- and possessive articles (mein, dein): the adjective shows the gender: ein netter Mann mein altes Auto.
  1. Strong declension — when no article precedes: the adjective carries the article ending: guter Wein kaltes Wasser frische Eier.

In the nominative and accusative you see most of the differences: der gute Wein — ein guter Wein — guter Wein.
