With anstatt … zu + infinitive you say that someone does one actioninstead of another (instead of doing something): Anstatt zu lernen, spielt er.
As with um … zu,zu + infinitive goes at the end of the subordinate clause, and the subordinate clause has no subject of its own — both parts share the same subject:Statt zu arbeiten, schläft er.
The short form statt … zu means the same as anstatt … zu. The subordinate clause can stand at the front or at the end:Er spielt, anstatt zu lernen.Anstatt zu lernen, spielt er.
