Explanation

In German there are two important types of questions.

W-questions start with a question word: wer, was, wo, wann, warum, wie … The conjugated verb is in position 2: Wo wohnst du?

Yes/No questions have no question word. Here the verb comes first in position 1: Wohnst du in Berlin? The answer is ja or nein.
