während introduces a subordinate clause. The finite verb goes at the end of the clause, and a comma comes before the main clause.

Now comes the second meaning: während shows contrast (whereas). It sets two different things against each other:Während ich gern lese, sieht mein Bruder lieber fern.
Here it's not about time but about contrast: one person reads, the other watches TV.

Proportion with je … desto
With je … desto (or je … umso) you show that two things change together (the more …, the more …). Both parts need a comparative.
The comparative is the graded form with -er:mehr,länger,besser,höher.
The first part starts with je + comparative. That's a subordinate clause: the finite verb goes at the end:Je mehr man übt, …
The second part starts with desto (or umso) + comparative. Right after that comes the finite verb (inversion): …, desto besser wird man.
Between the two parts there is a comma:Je mehr man übt, desto besser wird man.
