Contrast and proportion: während and je … desto

B2

während can express contrasts (Ich mag Tee, während er Kaffee mag.), and jedesto shows proportions (Je mehr, desto besser.). With these you argue more precisely.

  • Contrastive 'während'
  • 'je … desto / umso' comparatives

Contrast with während

während introduces a subordinate clause. The finite verb goes at the end of the clause, and a comma comes before the main clause.

From B1 you already know während as temporal: two things happen at the same time: Während ich koche, höre ich Musik.

Now comes the second meaning: während shows contrast (whereas). It sets two different things against each other: Während ich gern lese, sieht mein Bruder lieber fern.

Here it's not about time but about contrast: one person reads, the other watches TV.

MeaningSubordinate clause
temporal (at the same time)Während ich koche, höre ich Musik.
contrast (whereas)Während ich gern lese, sieht mein Bruder lieber fern.
contrast (whereas)Der Norden ist flach, während der Süden gebirgig ist.
