Dative — articles

The dative is the case for the indirect object — the person you give something to, say something to, or do something for: Ich gebe dem Kind einen Apfel.

In the dative the article changes. The endings -m and -r mark it:

  1. masculine / neuterdem: Ich helfe dem Mann. Das Spielzeug gehört dem Kind.
  2. feminineder: Ich danke der Frau.
  3. pluralden: Wir helfen den Kindern.

ein, kein and possessive articles also take these endings: einem / einer, keinem / keiner, meinem / meiner.
