Extended participial attributes

B2

Extended participial attributes pack whole pieces of information before the noun: der gestern eröffnete Laden. Typical of demanding texts — here you learn to understand and form them.

  • Extended participial attributes

Explanation

An extended participial attribute is a participle that, like an adjective, stands before a noun and also has its own complements. These complements stand between the article and the noun, directly before the participle: das [von ihm geschriebene] Buch.

The participle always carries an adjective ending. There are two forms:

  1. participle I — infinitive + -d + ending (steigen → steigend): die [seit Jahren steigenden] Preise. It describes something active that is happening right now.
  2. participle II — the perfect form + ending (schreiben → geschrieben): das [von ihm geschriebene] Buch. It describes something passive or already finished.

An extended participial attribute says the same as a relative clause, only more compact: das [von ihm geschriebene] Buch — das Buch, das von ihm geschrieben wurde.

More
When reading, the article comes first, then the complements with the participle, and only at the end the noun: die [in der Stadt lebenden] Menschen.
