The genitive shows who something belongs to and links two nouns: das Auto des Mannes.
In the genitive, the article and often the noun change. The endings -s and -r mark the case:
masculine / neuter — des:das Auto des Mannes.das Spielzeug des Kindes.
feminine — der:die Tasche der Frau.
plural — der:die Spielsachen der Kinder.
With masculine and neuter nouns in the singular, you add -s or -es:des Mannes,des Kindes.
The same endings apply to ein,kein, and possessive articles:eines / einer,keines / keiner,meines / meiner.

A genitive often appears directly with another noun. This genitive attribute says who or what something belongs to: das Auto meines Vaters.
The genitive attribute usually comes after the noun: die Farbe der Blume.das Ende des Films.
