Genitive attribute

A genitive attribute is a noun in the genitive that specifies another noun more precisely. It stands behind its head noun: das Ergebnis der Untersuchung.

The head noun comes first, then the genitive attribute follows: die Folgen des Klimawandels. der Beginn des Semesters.

In the genitive, articles and often the noun change: der / das become des (+ noun ending in -s / -es), die and the plural become der:

  1. masculine / neuterdes: das Ergebnis des Versuchs. das Ende des Verfahrens.
  2. feminineder: das Ergebnis der Untersuchung.
  3. pluralder: die Folgen der Maßnahmen.
