Some prepositions take the genitive. The noun after them is therefore in the genitive: Während des Sommers reisen wir viel.

The most important ones are während, wegen, trotz, statt (also anstatt), aufgrund, innerhalb, and außerhalb.

In the genitive, the articles change: der and das become des, die becomes der, and in the plural you use der: wegen des Wetters trotz der Kälte innerhalb der Häuser.

In the masculine and neuter, the noun in the singular gets the ending -s or -es: des Sommers, des Kindes.
