Grammar → Impersonal es and es as a placeholder
Impersonal es
Some sentences need a subject, but there is no person acting. Then es stands as an impersonal subject. This es does not refer to a specific thing — it is simply there so the sentence has a subject.
You need es especially in three groups:
Weather — es plus a weather verb: Es regnet.Es schneit.Es ist kalt.
Wellbeing — es with a person in the dative:Es geht mir gut.Es ist mir kalt.
Fixed expressions — es gibt and es geht um:Es gibt einen Park.In dem Film geht es um einen Hund.
The es usually stands in position 1. If the sentence starts with something else, es moves behind the verb: Heute regnet es.Mir geht es gut.

Example
weather
Es regnet seit Stunden.
State
Es geht mir heute gut.
fixed expression
Es gibt hier ein Café.
fixed expression
In dem Buch geht es um eine Reise.

es as placeholder and correlate
es often also appears as a placeholder at the front of the sentence so that position 1 is occupied. The real subject then comes later: Es spielen viele Kinder im Park. As soon as another word stands in position 1, this es drops: Im Park spielen viele Kinder.
Very often es announces an entire subordinate clause. Then es is called a correlate. The dass-clause or zu-clause is the actual subject or object:
Es ist schön, dass du da bist.Es freut mich, dass du kommst.Ich finde es gut, dass wir uns treffen.
More
If the subordinate clause comes first, you do not need es:Dass du da bist, ist schön. After a verb with an object, es often stays: Ich finde es schön, dass du da bist.
