Light verb constructions

In a light verb construction, a noun and a verb carry the meaning together. The noun is the important part — the verb is only grammatical and has almost lost its own meaning: eine Entscheidung treffen simply means to decide.

The verb in such a construction is called a light verb. Typical light verbs are treffen stellen ziehen üben nehmen bringen. Which verb goes with which noun, you learn as a fixed pair.

Often a preposition stands before the noun: zur Verfügung stellen in Betracht ziehen in Frage kommen zum Ausdruck bringen. Some constructions have only the bare noun: Kritik üben eine Frage stellen Abschied nehmen.

A few important pairs:
1. Entscheidung — with treffen: Wir treffen eine Entscheidung.
2. Verfügung — with stellen: Sie stellt uns das Auto zur Verfügung.
3. Betracht — with ziehen: Ich ziehe diesen Plan in Betracht.
4. Kritik — with üben: Er übt scharfe Kritik.
