Modal particles

Modal particles are small words that show your attitude: ja, doch, mal, halt, eben, wohl, eigentlich, denn. They do not change the content — they colour the statement: Das ist ja toll! Komm doch mal!

Modal particles stand in the middle field, i.e. after the finite verb and usually after the subject. They never stand in position 1 and are unstressed: Was machst du denn? Das weißt du doch.

The most important modal particles and their nuance:
1. ja — you refer to something known: Du kennst ihn ja.
2. doch — you contradict an expectation or urge: Komm doch mit!
3. mal — you make a request friendlier: Hilf mir mal.
4. halt / eben — you show resignation: Das ist halt so. Dann gehen wir eben später.
5. wohl — you presume something: Sie ist wohl krank.
6. eigentlich — you ask casually: Wie heißt du eigentlich?
7. denn — you show interest in a question: Wo warst du denn?
