Formal nominalization

In nominal style, a verb becomes a noun. A whole action becomes a single word — typical for formal texts like reports and essays.

Many of these nouns are formed with a fixed ending. They are almost always feminine and used with die:

  1. -ung — from the verb: durchführendie Durchführung. untersuchendie Untersuchung.
  2. -tion / -ation — often from verbs in -ieren: produzierendie Produktion. informierendie Information.
  3. -ierung — the action itself: realisierendie Realisierung. finanzierendie Finanzierung.
