Prepositions with dative

Prepositions like mit, bei, nach, seit, von, zu always take the dative. You learn them as a fixed group — important for talking correctly about people, places and time.

Some prepositions are always followed by the dative. The noun after them is therefore in the dative, whether you mean a location or a direction.

The most important ones are: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu (also gegenüber).

In the dative the articles change: der becomes dem, das becomes dem, die becomes der, in the plural den: Ich fahre mit dem Bus. Sie kommt aus der Stadt.

mit, von and zu often contract with the article: zu dem becomes zum, zu der becomes zur, bei dem becomes beim, von dem becomes vom — Ich gehe zum Arzt. Wir kommen vom Bahnhof.
