sondern after a negation
sondern connects two main clauses or two parts of a sentence and expresses a correction. It only appears after a negation with nicht or kein:Das ist kein Tee, sondern Kaffee.
The first part is wrong, the second part is right. The pattern is always nicht … sondern …: Nicht heute, sondern morgen.Ich trinke nicht Tee, sondern Kaffee.

The position of nicht
nicht negates a whole sentence or just one part. Where nicht stands depends on what you are negating.
Sentence negation — nicht stands at the end of the sentence when the whole action is negated: Ich verstehe das nicht.Heute arbeite ich nicht.
Complex predicate — if there is an infinitive or a Partizip,nicht stands directly before it, at the end of the verb bracket:Ich kann heute nicht kommen.Wir haben den Film nicht gesehen.
Partial negation — if you negate only one word, nicht stands directly before it, often with a correction: Ich fahre nicht heute, sondern morgen.

With partial negation nicht almost always comes before the word you are correcting, followed by the correction with sondern:Nicht der Mann, sondern die Frau wartet.
