Subjunctive II: würde, hätte, wäre
With würde, hätte, and wäre you make statements polite and express wishes and hypotheses — important for polite requests and "what if" thoughts.

With the subjunctive II you speak politely, express wishes, and talk about unreal situations.
The easiest way to form it is with würde and the infinitive: the finite würde goes in position 2, the infinitive goes at the end of the sentence.
The two parts form a verb bracket: Ich würde gern mitkommen. Wir würden lieber zu Hause bleiben.
würde has its own ending for each person: ich würde du würdest er würde wir würden ihr würdet sie würden.

Some verbs are almost always used in the synthetic form, not with würde.
These are haben and sein: hatte becomes hätte, war becomes wäre: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. Das wäre toll.
The modal verbs also have their own forms: könnte müsste sollte dürfte wollte. Könntest du mir helfen? Wir müssten jetzt gehen.
You recognize them by the umlaut and the ending -e: ich hätte ich wäre ich könnte.
