Subordinate clauses with weil and dass

With a subordinate clause you add more information to a main clause. The connectors weil and dass introduce a subordinate clause. A comma comes before the subordinate clause.

The most important point is word order: In the subordinate clause the verb moves to the end:

1. weil — you give a reason (because): Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
2. dass — you state content (that): Ich hoffe, dass du heute kommst.

Compare main clause and subordinate clause: In the main clause the verb stands in position 2, in the subordinate clause the verb stands at the very end: Ich bin krank. Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
