Two-part connectors – advanced

Two-part connectors consist of two parts that belong together and appear in the same sentence. At B2 level, they often express a subtle contrast or weighing up.

Four important pairs:
1. nicht nur … sondern auch — you emphasise not just one thing but both: Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.
2. zwar … aber — you acknowledge something and set a contrast against it: Das Auto ist zwar teuer, aber sehr zuverlässig.
3. einerseits … andererseits — you name two sides of something: Einerseits möchte ich reisen, andererseits habe ich wenig Geld.
4. teils … teils — something applies partly one way, partly another: Das Wetter war teils sonnig, teils bewölkt.
