Compounds
In German you can join two or more words into a new word — that is a compound:Haus + Tür → Haustür.
The last word is the head. It determines gender and meaning: die Tür → die Haustür.die Karte → die Fahrkarte.
You read a compound best from the back: A Fahrkarte is a Karte, not a Fahren. The first part only says which Karte.

Suffixes
With a suffix — an ending syllable — you form a new word from an existing one. The suffix often reveals word class and gender.
These suffixes form nouns, almost always with the article die:-ung (die Meinung), -heit (die Freiheit), -keit (die Möglichkeit), -schaft (die Freundschaft).
The suffixes -nis and -tum mostly form nouns with das:das Ergebnis,das Eigentum.
These suffixes form adjectives:-bar (essbar), -los (arbeitslos), -lich (freundlich), -ig (sonnig), -haft (fehlerhaft), -sam (sparsam).
More
-bar often means "you can do it": essbar means you can eat it.-los means "without": arbeitslos means without work.
