It is half past seven on Monday morning. There are lots of people at the clinic.
नेहानमस्ते, डॉक्टर। आज चालीस मरीज़।
Hello, doctor. Forty patients today.
आशाचालीस? सात बजे तक काम करेंगे। पहला मरीज़।
Forty? We will work until seven. First patient.

फिर मैं। पीठ में दर्द है। पैर में भी। सिर में भी।
Me again. My back hurts. My leg too. My head too.

गहरी साँस लीजिए। फिर से।
Breathe deeply. Again.

बच्चे दूर हैं। घर में अच्छा नहीं लगता। कोई नहीं है।
My children are far away. I do not feel good at home. There is nobody there.

आपको लोगों की ज़रूरत है। मेरा पर्चा। हर सुबह राधा का कैफ़े। कॉफ़ी, केक और लोग।
You need people. My prescription. Radha's café every morning. Coffee, cake and people.

At eleven a student comes in.

Four. I have an exam on Friday. I study at night.

चार बहुत कम हैं। आठ घंटे सोइए। पानी पीजिए।
Four is too little. Sleep eight hours. Drink water.
एक बजे भी क्लिनिक भरा है।
At one the clinic is still full.
- नेहा
आप फिर खाना नहीं खा रही हैं।
You are not eating again.

समय नहीं है। बाद में।
There is no time. Later.

आपकी माँ का फ़ोन। तीसरी बार।
Your mother is calling. For the third time.
कमलातुम फिर नहीं खाती। मुझे सब पता है। चार बजे नए पड़ोसी आएँगे।
You are not eating again. I know everything. The new neighbour will come at four.

माफ़ करना। चालीस मरीज़ थे।
Sorry. There were forty patients.
कमलाबैठो। खाओ। डॉक्टर को भी खाना चाहिए।
Sit down. Eat. A doctor needs food too.
- आशा
मैं चवालीस साल की हूँ। बच्ची नहीं।
I am forty-four. Not a child.

मेरी बच्ची हो।

डॉक्टर क्यों बनीं?
Why did you become a doctor?
- आशा
बचपन में नानी थकी रहती थीं। मैं डॉक्टर थी। मेरी गुड़िया नर्स थी। पर्चा, चाय और बिस्तर। मुझे लोगों की मदद पसंद है।
As a child Grandma was often tired. I was the doctor. My doll was the nurse. The prescription was tea and bed. I like helping people.
- मीरा
शनिवार मैं बच्चों के साथ गाऊँगी। आएँगी?
On Saturday I will sing with the children. Will you come?
आशाशनिवार काम... अच्छा। शनिवार काम नहीं करूँगी। पूरा परिवार आएगा।
Work on Saturday... All right. I will not work on Saturday. The whole family will come.

मैं भी। अब खाओ। दोनों!
Me too. Now eat. Both of you!
