The storyA rainy Saturday in spring. Meera wanted to ride her bike to the park with a friend, and her mother Asha is working again. So Meera spends the day at her grandmother's, talking about summers at the sea, a puppy, and what she wants to be.

It is Saturday. It is raining. Meera is in Grandma's kitchen.
मीरामाँ का फ़ोन! माँ, शनिवार को भी काम?
Mum is calling! Mum, work on Saturday too?
आशाहाँ। लोगों की मदद करनी है। पैनकेक बना रहे हो?
Yes. I need to help people. Are you making pancakes?
- मीरा
हाँ। शाम को आओ। बहुत पैनकेक हैं।
Yes. Come this evening. There are lots of pancakes.
मीरा समुद्र, सूरज और रेत का चित्र बनाती है।
Meera draws the sea, the sun and sand.
- मीरा
हर गर्मी पूरा परिवार समुद्र जाता है। माँ काम नहीं करतीं। पूरा दिन साथ हैं।
Every summer the whole family goes to the sea. Mum does not work. She is with us all day.
- मीरा
सुबह तैरते हैं। समुद्र झील से ठंडा है। मुझे डर नहीं लगता।
We swim in the morning. The sea is colder than the lake. I am not afraid.
कमलाऔर तुम्हारा भाई?
And your brother?
- मीरा
छोटा है। तैर नहीं सकता। बस रेत खाता है।
He is little. He cannot swim. He just eats sand.
मीरादोपहर के बाद रेत का घर बनाते हैं। हर साल बड़ा।
After lunch we build a sand house. Bigger every year.
- कमला
शाम को हवा चलती है। गरम कपड़े चाहिए।
It is windy in the evening. You need warm clothes.
- मीरा
मुझे कभी ठंड नहीं लगती।
I never feel cold.
- कमला
पिछले साल समुद्र जैसी नीली थी!
Last year you were as blue as the sea!
- मीरा
बस थोड़ा।
Just a little.
मीरा छोटा भूरा कुत्ता बनाती है।
Meera draws a little brown dog.
- मीरा
नानी, मुझे छोटा कुत्ता चाहिए। दोस्त के पास है।
Grandma, I want a puppy. My friend has one.
कमलाऔर मोती? उसे कुत्ते पसंद नहीं हैं।
And Moti? He does not like dogs.
- मीरा
मोती यहाँ रहता है। कुत्ता हमारे फ़्लैट में रहेगा।
Moti lives here. The dog will live in our flat.
- कमला
ध्यान कौन रखेगा? माता-पिता काम करते हैं। तुम स्कूल जाती हो।
Who will look after it? Your parents work. You go to school.
- मीरा
मैं मोती का ध्यान रखती हूँ।
I look after Moti.
- कमला
नहीं। मोती तुम्हारा ध्यान रखता है।
No. Moti looks after you.
- मीरा
माँ कहती हैं, कुत्ते के लिए समय चाहिए। मैं चित्र बनाऊँगी। घर पर काम करूँगी। कुत्ते के साथ।
Mum says a dog needs time. I will draw pictures. I will work at home. With a dog.
कमलाशिक्षक नहीं बनोगी? मेरी तरह?
You will not be a teacher? Like me?
- मीरा
नहीं। शिक्षक हमेशा कहते हैं, बाद में।
No. Teachers always say later.
- कमला
मैं कहती हूँ, अभी!
I say now!
बारिश रुकती है। धूप है।
The rain stops. It is sunny.
- मीरा
अब साइकिल चलाऊँ?
May I ride my bicycle now?
- कमला
हाँ। टोपी और मफ़लर के साथ।
Yes. With a hat and scarf.
शाम को माँ आती हैं।
In the evening Mum comes in.
मीरामाँ, कुत्ता मेरा दोस्त है। गर्मी में समुद्र पर कुत्ता चाहिए।
Mum, the dog is my friend. I want a puppy at the sea in summer.
- आशा
शायद, मीरा। शायद।
Perhaps, Meera. Perhaps.
मोती चित्र देखता है। कुत्ता उसे पसंद नहीं है।
Moti looks at the picture. He does not like the dog.
