Reading tips

म · ma · The consonant carries a short a unless another sign changes it.

न · na

क · ka

A consonant normally carries a short inherent vowel. Join sounds rather than reciting letter names. म + न gives मन, man, mind. At a word end the inherent a is normally not spoken in these Hindi words.

Read नमक as na-mak. The final क ends in k, not an added ka. कम, kam, means less. Practise the complete spellings मन, नमक and कम; the character cards play labelled model words, not isolated consonants.
