Independent vowels stand where a syllable has no starting consonant. Attached vowel marks do not stand alone. You have met अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ, the usual eleven school vowel entries.

ऋ and ृ often read approximately ri in modern Hindi. They are not a plain र plus ordinary ि in the spelling. Rare Sanskrit ॠ ऌ ॡ are reference-only beyond the active Hindi inventory.
