Unit 4 · Rhythm, schwa and spelling · Read

Rhythm, schwa and spelling

Understand unwritten vowel loss, nasal vowels and phrase melody.

No tone marks

Standard Hindi does not use lexical tone as a basic word contrast. Question melody and phrase emphasis still matter. Devanagari has no ordinary stress mark; do not force the same English stress pattern onto every word.

The inherent vowel is not always spoken

A bare consonant usually carries a short vowel in the writing system, but Hindi often drops that vowel at a word end and in some internal positions. कमल is kamal, not kamala. नाम is nām, not nāma. Do not add or remove written characters to imitate a rough pronunciation hint.

कमल

नाम

नमस्ते

hello

Use the whole word

Vowel length, consonant combinations and nasalisation contribute to word rhythm. Some borrowed and Sanskrit-derived spellings do not follow a simple one-rule reading shortcut. First decode the printed parts, then check the whole-word recording. Detailed schwa and nasal spelling practice comes after you know enough signs.
