Saturday morning, the day of the festival. The sun is out. On the way to the market square, you and Intan pass the old toy and gift shop. Mrs Wati is standing in the doorway.

IntanSelamat pagi, Bu Wati! Ya. Malam ini Budi main pertama!
Good morning, Mrs Wati! Yes. Tonight Budi is playing first!

Inside, the shop smells of wood and old paper. Mrs Wati sits down behind her counter and takes off her glasses.

Saya sudah lama kenal Budi kecil. Dulu umurnya sepuluh tahun.

Milik Bu Sari. Trompet kecil dan tua. Bu Sari memberikannya kepada Budi.
The trumpet was Sari's. A small, old trumpet. Sari gave it to him.

Saya tidak tahu. Bu Sari tahu semuanya. Saya tidak.

Lalu hujan lebat. Banyak orang pulang.
Then it rained. It poured! And lots of people went home.

Budi kecil basah dan sedih sekali. Dia juga mau pulang.
Little Budi was wet and very sad. He wanted to go home too.

Nenek? Nenek di mana?
And Grandma? Where was Grandma?
- Ibu Wati
Bu Sari duduk di bangku di depan panggung. Dengan payung.
Sari was sitting on the bench in front of the stage. With an umbrella.
- Ibu Wati
Katanya, "Budi, jangan pulang! Main!"
She said: 'Budi, you're not going home! Play!'

At last the rain stopped, and the people came back.
- Ibu Wati
Kami semua mendengarkan. Lalu semua orang menyanyi.
We all listened. And then the whole square sang.

Bu Wati juga menyanyi?
And did you sing, Mrs Wati?
- Ibu Wati
Tentu! Saya menyanyi. Bu Sari menyanyi. Kami semua menyanyi.
Of course! I sang, Sari sang, we all sang.

His dad was very happy. Afterwards his parents bought little Budi a new, big trumpet.

Mrs Wati puts her glasses back on and looks out at the sunny street.
