A Saturday morning in spring at Maria's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
È sabato. Fuori piove, e fa molto freddo.
It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold.
Sofia è seduta alla finestra. Ha dieci anni. Oggi non è contenta.
Sofia is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.
SofiaNonna, perché piove di nuovo? Oggi io e Anna vogliamo andare in bici al parco!
Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Anna and I want to ride our bikes to the park!

Anna is Sofia's best friend from school. She has a little puppy.
MariaIn bici? Non oggi, Sofia. Fa troppo freddo. E fuori c’è vento.
By bike? Not today, Sofia. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.
SofiaMa io ho un impermeabile! Non ho bisogno del sole!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!
MariaTu hai un impermeabile. Ma la bici no.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.
MariaOggi puoi disegnare, oppure aiutarmi. Faccio le frittelle.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Elena, Sofia's mother, calling from work.
ElenaCiao, Sofia. Mi dispiace, oggi lavoro di nuovo. Fino a stasera.
Hi, Sofia. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
SofiaDi nuovo? Mamma, lavori sempre! Anche il sabato!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
ElenaLo so. Ma devo aiutare le persone. Tu e la nonna fate le frittelle?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
SofiaSì. Mamma, vieni stasera! Ci sono tante frittelle.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.
In the kitchen, Sofia draws the sea, the sun and sand.

SofiaGuarda, nonna!
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!
SofiaLa mattina nuotiamo.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.
SofiaSo nuotare meglio della mamma!
I can swim better than Mum!
MariaE il tuo fratellino?
And your brother?
SofiaÈ ancora troppo piccolo. Non sa nuotare. Mangia solo sabbia!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!
SofiaDopo pranzo facciamo un castello di sabbia. Ogni estate uno più grande!
After lunch we build a sandcastle. A bigger one every summer!
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Sofia, your hat! And your jacket!'
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.
But I'm never cold by the sea!
MariaMai? L’anno scorso eri blu come il mare!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!

SofiaNon è vero! Be’... solo un po’.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Sofia turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
SofiaNonna, guarda: un cucciolo! Come quello di Anna. Io voglio davvero un cucciolo!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Anna's. I really want a puppy!
MariaUn cucciolo? E Milo? A Milo non piacciono i cani.
A puppy? And Milo? Milo doesn't like dogs.
Milo lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
MariaE chi lo guarda? I tuoi genitori lavorano, e tu sei a scuola.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.
SofiaIo so guardare gli animali! Guardo Milo ogni giorno!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Milo every day!
MariaNo, Sofia. Milo guarda te.
No, Sofia. Milo looks after you.
On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.

That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
MariaUna pittrice? Non un’insegnante, come la tua nonna?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
SofiaNo! Le insegnanti dicono sempre: "Più tardi".
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
MariaIo non dico mai: "Più tardi". Dico: "Adesso!"
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
SofiaNonna, c’è il sole! Posso andare in bici adesso?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?
MariaPuoi.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.
SofiaAnna! C’è il sole! Vieni al parco con il cucciolo!
Anna! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Elena comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
SofiaMamma!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Anna's puppy is my friend now!
ElenaE vuoi di nuovo un cucciolo, vero?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?

Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
ElenaForse, Sofia. Forse.
Maybe, Sofia. Maybe.
Milo looks at the puppy in Sofia's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
