It is Monday of festival week. Doctor Ilze is at the practice already. She always comes early.
LindaLabrīt, daktere! Šodien četrdesmit pacienti.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
IlzeČetrdesmit? Labi. Strādājam līdz septiņiem. Pirmo pacientu, lūdzu!
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!

An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh. - Antons
Labdien, daktere! Atkal es.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
IlzeAk, Antona kungs! Jūs nākat divreiz nedēļā. Kā jūtaties?
Oh, Mr Antons! You're here twice a week. How do you feel?
- Antons
Slikti. Man sāp mugura. Kāja un galva arī.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
IlzeGalva arī? Labi. Elpojiet dziļi. Vēlreiz.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
- Antons
Daktere, mani bērni ir tālu. Mājās man ir garlaicīgi.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
IlzeJūs neesat slims. Jums vienkārši ir garlaicīgi.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.

IlzeTe ir recepte: Katru rītu Lienes kafejnīca. Kafija, kūka un cilvēki.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Liene's café. Coffee, cake and people.
- Antons
Kūka kā zāles? Man ļoti patīk šī recepte!
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!
He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
IlzeLinda, viņam nevajag zāles. Viņam vajag cilvēkus.
Linda, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
- Ginta
Labdien. Man katru dienu sāp galva.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
IlzeCik stundu jūs guļat?
How many hours do you sleep?
- Ginta
Četras. Piektdien man ir eksāmens. Es mācos naktī.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.

IlzeČetras? Par maz. Nogurusi galva neko nemācās.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
IlzeGuliet astoņas stundas naktī. Dzeriet daudz ūdens.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
LindaDaktere, jūs atkal neēdat pusdienas!
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!
IlzeMan nav laika, Linda. Varbūt vēlāk.
I haven't got time, Linda. Maybe later.
LindaJūsu mamma ir pie tālruņa. Trešo reizi šodien. Ko teikt?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
MaijaIlze, tu atkal neēd. Es zinu. Linda man visu saka.
Ilze, you're not eating again. I know: Linda tells me everything.
MaijaČetros nāk mans jaunais kaimiņš. Viņš ir slims.

IlzeEs zinu, mammu. Es arī zinu visu.
I know, Mum. I know everything too.
MaijaKad tu nāc šovakar? Elīna jautā.
And this evening? Elīna is asking when you're coming.
IlzeSeptiņos, mammu. Pie tevis.
At seven, Mum. To your place.

MaijaTu vienmēr saki septiņos. Bet nāc deviņos.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.
Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home.
Eight o'clock, in Maija's living room at number 7. Elīna sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
ElīnaMammu! Tu teici septiņos!
Mum! You said seven!
IlzeAtvaino, Elīna. Šodien bija četrdesmit pacienti.
Sorry, Elīna. There were forty patients today.
ElīnaČetrdesmit pacienti! Bet mani tu redzi tikai vakarā.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
MaijaApsēdies, meitiņ. Ēd. Ārstam arī jāēd.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
IlzeMammu, es neesmu bērns. Man ir četrdesmit četri gadi!
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
MaijaTu esi mans bērns. Tev jāēd.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
ElīnaMammu, kāpēc tu esi ārste?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
IlzeKad biju maza, kā tu, vecmāmiņa bija skolotāja. Visu dienu skolā.
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.

IlzeVakarā viņa bija nogurusi. Es biju bēdīga.
In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
IlzeEs biju ārste. Vecmāmiņa bija paciente. Lelle bija medmāsa.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
MaijaJā. Recepte vienmēr bija tā pati: Tēja un gulta.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
IlzeMan patīk, kad cilvēkiem ir labāk. Tāpēc esmu ārste.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
ElīnaSestdien es dziedāšu ar bērniem! Vai tu nāksi?
On Saturday I will sing with the children! Are you coming?
IlzeSestdien? Sestdien es strādāju līdz...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work until...
ElīnaMammu! Tu vienmēr strādā!
Mum! You're always working!
Ilze looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Maija says nothing.

IlzeLabi. Sestdien nestrādāju. Visi nākam uz svētkiem. Tu, es, tētis un brālis.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your brother.
MaijaEs arī! Es vienmēr esmu svētkos. Es redzu visu un zinu visu.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
MaijaTagad ēdiet abas! Jūs esat pārāk tievas.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.

All three of them eat pancakes. Ilze is already on her third.
