A Saturday morning in spring at Maija's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
Ir sestdiena. Ārā līst. Ir ļoti auksts.
It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold.
Elīna sēž pie loga. Viņai ir desmit gadi. Šodien viņa nav priecīga.
Elīna is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.
ElīnaVecmāmiņ, kāpēc atkal līst? Šodien mēs ar Unu gribam braukt uz parku ar velosipēdiem!
Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Una and I want to ride our bikes to the park!
Una ir Elīnas draudzene no skolas. Viņai ir mazs kucēns.
Una is Elīna's best friend from school. She has a little puppy.
MaijaAr velosipēdu? Šodien ne, Elīna. Pārāk auksts. Pūš vējš.
By bike? Not today, Elīna. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.

ElīnaBet man ir lietusmētelis! Man nevajag sauli!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!
MaijaTev ir lietusmētelis. Velosipēdam nav.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.
MaijaŠodien tu vari zīmēt. Vai palīdzēt man. Es cepu pankūkas.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Ilze, Elīna's mother, calling from work.
IlzeSveika, Elīna. Atvaino, es šodien atkal strādāju. Līdz vakaram.
Hi, Elīna. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
ElīnaAtkal? Mammu, tu vienmēr strādā! Arī sestdien!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
IlzeEs zinu. Bet man jāpalīdz cilvēkiem. Vai jūs cepat pankūkas?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
ElīnaJā. Mammu, nāc šovakar! Ir daudz pankūku.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.

Virtuvē Elīna zīmē jūru, sauli un smiltis.
In the kitchen, Elīna draws the sea, the sun and sand.
ElīnaSkaties, vecmāmiņ! Katru vasaru visa ģimene brauc pie jūras.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.
ElīnaTur ir karsti. Mamma nestrādā. Viņa visu dienu ir ar mums!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!
ElīnaNo rīta mēs peldam. Jūra ir aukstāka nekā ezers. Bet man nav bail.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.
ElīnaEs peldu labāk nekā mamma!
I can swim better than Mum!
MaijaKo dara tavs brālis?
And your brother?
ElīnaViņš vēl ir pārāk mazs. Neprot peldēt. Ēd tikai smiltis!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!

ElīnaPēc pusdienām mēs ceļam smilšu pili. Katru vasaru lielāku!
After lunch we build a sandcastle. A bigger one every summer!
ElīnaVakarā pie jūras pūš vējš. Mamma vienmēr saka: Elīna, cepuri un jaku!
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Elīna, your hat! And your jacket!'
MaijaMammai ir taisnība. Vakarā pie jūras vajag siltas drēbes.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.
ElīnaBet pie jūras man nekad nav auksti!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
MaijaNekad? Pagājušajā gadā tu biji zila kā jūra!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!
ElīnaNebiju! Nu... Tikai mazliet.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Elīna turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
ElīnaVecmāmiņ, skaties! Kucēns! Kā Unas. Es ļoti gribu kucēnu!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Una's. I really want a puppy!
MaijaKucēnu? Un Muris? Murim nepatīk suņi.
A puppy? And Muris? Muris doesn't like dogs.
ElīnaMuris dzīvo te. Kucēns var dzīvot mūsu dzīvoklī!
Muris lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
MaijaKas viņu pieskata? Vecāki strādā. Tu esi skolā.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.
ElīnaEs protu pieskatīt dzīvniekus! Katru dienu pieskatu Muri!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Muris every day!
MaijaNē, Elīna. Muris pieskata tevi.
No, Elīna. Muris looks after you.

On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
ElīnaMamma saka: Sunim vajag laiku. Man nav laika.
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'
MaijaTaisnība. Mamma daudz strādā. Tāpēc ir nogurusi.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.
ElīnaTāpēc es gribu būt gleznotāja. Gleznotāja strādā mājās. Var pieskatīt kucēnu!
That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
MaijaGleznotāja? Ne skolotāja, kā vecmāmiņa?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
ElīnaNē! Skolotāji vienmēr saka vēlāk.
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
MaijaEs nekad nesaku vēlāk. Es saku tagad!
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
ElīnaVecmāmiņ, saule! Vai tagad varu braukt ar velosipēdu?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?

MaijaVari. Bet ar cepuri un šalli. Ārā vēl ir auksti.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.
ElīnaUna! Spīd saule! Nāc uz parku ar kucēnu!
Una! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Ilze comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
ElīnaMammu! No rīta lietus, tad saule. Un Unas kucēns tagad ir mans draugs!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Una's puppy is my friend now!
IlzeTu atkal gribi kucēnu, vai ne?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
ElīnaJā. Bet vasarā pie jūras! Tur kucēnam ir labāk nekā pilsētā.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
IlzeVarbūt, Elīna. Varbūt.
Maybe, Elīna. Maybe.
Muris skatās uz kucēnu Elīnas zīmēšanas blokā. Viņam tas nemaz nepatīk.
Muris looks at the puppy in Elīna's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
