Monday of festival week, half past seven in the morning. The waiting room of the Šilupė practice is already full.
Pirmadienis, balandžio tryliktoji. Gydytoja Daiva jau poliklinikoje. Ji visada ateina anksti.
Monday, the thirteenth of April. Doctor Daiva is already at the practice. She always comes in early.
LauraLabas rytas, gydytoja! Šiandien keturiasdešimt pacientų.
Good morning, doctor! Forty patients today.
DaivaKeturiasdešimt? Na, mes dirbame iki septynių. Pirmas pacientas, prašau!
Forty? Well, we work until seven. First patient, please!

An old man with a walking stick comes in very slowly and sits down with a happy sigh. - ponas Antanas
Laba diena, gydytoja! Tai vėl aš.
Good day, doctor! It's me again.
DaivaO, ponas Antanas! Jūs čia būnate du kartus per savaitę. Kaip jaučiatės?
Oh, Mr Antanas! You're here twice a week. How do you feel?
- ponas Antanas
Blogai. Man skauda nugarą. Ir koją. Ir galvą.
Bad. My back hurts. And my leg. And my head.
DaivaIr galvą? Gerai. Giliai kvėpuokite... Dar kartą.
Your head too? All right. Breathe in deeply... Once more.
- ponas Antanas
Gydytoja, mano vaikai toli. Namie man labai nuobodu.
Doctor, my children are far away. At home I'm very bored.
DaivaJūs nesergate. Jums tiesiog nuobodu.
You aren't ill. You're just bored.

DaivaŠtai mano receptas: kiekvieną rytą – Rūtos kavinė. Kava, pyragas ir žmonės.
Here's my prescription: every morning, Rūta's café. Coffee, cake and people.
- ponas Antanas
Pyragas kaip vaistai? Man labai patinka šitas receptas!
Cake as medicine? I like this prescription very much!
He goes off, smiling. The receptionist shakes her head.
DaivaLaura, jam nereikia vaistų. Jam reikia žmonių.
Laura, he doesn't need medicine. He needs people.
More patients: a cough, a cut finger, a baby who will not stop crying. At eleven, a student comes in with a heavy rucksack.
- Gintarė
Laba diena. Man skauda galvą. Kiekvieną dieną.
Good day. I have a headache. Every day.
DaivaKiek valandų jūs miegate?
How many hours do you sleep?
- Gintarė
Keturias. Penktadienį egzaminas, todėl aš mokausi naktį.
Four. I have an exam on Friday, so I study at night.

DaivaKeturias? Per mažai. Pavargusi galva nieko neišmoksta.
Four? Too little. A tired head learns nothing.
DaivaMiegokite aštuonias valandas per naktį ir gerkite daug vandens.
Sleep eight hours a night and drink a lot of water.
One o'clock. The waiting room is still full. The receptionist puts her head round the door.
LauraGydytoja, jūs vėl nevalgote pietų!
Doctor, you're not having lunch again!
DaivaNeturiu laiko, Laura. Gal vėliau.
I haven't got time, Laura. Maybe later.
LauraJūsų mama skambina. Jau trečią kartą šiandien. Ką jai sakyti?
Your mother is on the phone. The third time today. What shall I tell her?
The doctor sighs, smiles and picks up the phone.
OnaDaiva, tu vėl nevalgai. Aš žinau: Laura man viską sako.
Daiva, you're not eating again. I know: Laura tells me everything.
OnaIr ketvirtą pas tave ateina mano naujas kaimynas. Jis serga.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
OnaIr ketvirtą pas tave ateina mano nauja kaimynė. Ji serga.
And at four my new neighbour is coming to see you. They're ill.
DaivaŽinau, mama. Aš irgi viską žinau.
I know, Mum. I know everything too.
OnaO vakare? Elzė klausia, kada tu ateini.
And this evening? Elzė is asking when you're coming.
DaivaSeptintą, mama. Pas tave.
At seven, Mum. To your place.

OnaTu visada sakai: septintą. O ateini devintą.
You always say seven. And you come at nine.
Afternoon: more patients, more tea, still no lunch. At four, the new neighbour from number 7 comes in, with a sore throat and a story about a trumpet. At half past seven, the last patient goes home.
Eight o'clock, in Ona's living room at number 7. Elzė sits at the table with her yellow sketchbook. A plate of pancakes is waiting.
ElzėMama! Tu sakei: septintą!
Mum! You said seven!
DaivaAtsiprašau, Elze. Šiandien buvo keturiasdešimt pacientų.
Sorry, Elzė. There were forty patients today.
ElzėKeturiasdešimt pacientų! O mane tu matai tik vakare.
Forty patients! And me you only see in the evening.
OnaSėsk, dukra. Valgyk. Gydytoja irgi turi valgyti.
Sit down, my girl. Eat. A doctor has to eat too.
DaivaMama, aš ne vaikas. Man keturiasdešimt ketveri!
Mum, I'm not a child. I'm forty-four!
OnaTu mano vaikas, ir tau reikia valgyti.
You're my child, and you need to eat.
ElzėMama, kodėl tu gydytoja?
Mum, why are you a doctor?
DaivaKai buvau maža, kaip tu, močiutė buvo mokytoja. Ji visą dieną buvo mokykloje.
When I was little, like you, Grandma was a teacher. She was at school all day.

DaivaVakare ji buvo labai pavargusi, ir man buvo liūdna.
In the evening she was very tired, and I was sad.
DaivaTada aš buvau gydytoja. Močiutė buvo mano pacientė, o lėlė – slaugytoja.
So I was the doctor. Grandma was my patient, and my doll was the nurse.
OnaTaip. Ir receptas visada buvo tas pats: arbata ir lova.
Yes. And the prescription was always the same: tea and bed.
DaivaMan patinka, kai žmonės jaučiasi geriau. Todėl aš gydytoja.
I like it when people feel better. That's why I'm a doctor.
ElzėO šeštadienį, balandžio aštuonioliktą, aš dainuoju su vaikais! Tu ateini?
And on Saturday, the eighteenth of April, I'm singing with the children! Are you coming?
DaivaŠeštadienį? Šeštadienį aš dirbu iki...
On Saturday? On Saturday I work until...
ElzėMama! Tu visada dirbi!
Mum! You're always working!
Daiva looks at her daughter, then at her mother. For once, Ona says nothing.

DaivaGerai. Šeštadienį aš nedirbu. Mes visi ateiname į šventę: tu, aš, tėtis ir brolis.
All right. On Saturday I'm not working. We're all coming to the festival: you, me, Dad and your brother.
OnaO aš? Aš visada šventėje. Aš viską matau ir viską žinau.
And me? I'm always at the festival. I see everything and I know everything.
OnaO dabar valgykite! Jūs per plonos.
And now eat, both of you! You're too thin.
Jos visos trys valgo blynus. Daiva valgo jau trečią blyną.
All three of them eat pancakes. Daiva is already on her third.
