Tap a word to see what it means.
A Saturday morning in spring at Ona's. Rain runs down the living-room window.
Šeštadienis. Lauke lyja ir labai šalta.
It's Saturday. It's raining outside, and it's very cold.
Elzė sėdi prie lango. Jai dešimt metų. Šiandien ji nelaiminga.
Elzė is sitting at the window. She's ten. Today she's not happy.
ElzėMočiute, kodėl vėl lyja? Šiandien mes su Ugne norime važiuoti dviračiais į parką!
Grandma, why is it raining again? Today Ugnė and I want to ride our bikes to the park!
Ugnė – geriausia Elzės draugė iš mokyklos. Ji turi mažą šuniuką.
Ugnė is Elzė's best friend from school. She has a little puppy.
OnaDviračiais? Ne šiandien, Elze. Per šalta. Ir lauke vėjas.
By bike? Not today, Elzė. It's too cold. And it's windy outside.

ElzėBet aš turiu lietpaltį! Man nereikia saulės!
But I've got a raincoat! I don't need the sun!
OnaTu turi lietpaltį. Bet dviratis lietpalčio neturi.
You've got a raincoat. But the bike hasn't.
OnaŠiandien tu gali piešti arba man padėti. Aš gaminu blynus.
Today you can draw, or help me. I'm making pancakes.
The landlady's phone rings. It is Daiva, Elzė's mother, calling from work.
DaivaLabas, Elze. Atsiprašau, šiandien aš vėl dirbu. Iki vakaro.
Hi, Elzė. I'm sorry, I'm working again today. Until this evening.
ElzėVėl? Mama, tu visada dirbi! Net šeštadienį!
Again? Mum, you're always working! Even on Saturday!
DaivaŽinau. Bet aš turiu padėti žmonėms. Ar jūs su močiute gaminate blynus?
I know. But I have to help people. Are you and Grandma making pancakes?
ElzėTaip. Mama, vakare ateik! Blynų daug.
Yes. Mum, come this evening! There are lots of pancakes.

Virtuvėje Elzė piešia jūrą, saulę ir smėlį.
In the kitchen, Elzė draws the sea, the sun and sand.
ElzėŽiūrėk, močiute! Kiekvieną vasarą visa šeima važiuoja prie jūros.
Look, Grandma! Every summer the whole family goes to the sea.
ElzėTen karšta, ir mama nedirba. Visą dieną ji su mumis!
It's hot there, and Mum doesn't work. She's with us all day!
ElzėRyte mes plaukiame. Jūra šaltesnė nei ežeras, bet aš nebijau.
In the morning we swim. The sea is colder than the lake, but I'm not afraid.
ElzėAš moku plaukti geriau nei mama!
I can swim better than Mum!
OnaO tavo brolis?
And your brother?
ElzėJis dar per mažas. Jis nemoka plaukti. Jis tik valgo smėlį!
He's still too little. He can't swim. He just eats sand!

ElzėPo pietų mes statome pilį iš smėlio. Kiekvieną vasarą – didesnę!
After lunch we build a sandcastle. A bigger one every summer!
ElzėVakare prie jūros vėjas, todėl mama visada sako: „Elze, kepurę! Ir striukę!“
In the evening it's windy by the sea, so Mum always says: 'Elzė, your hat! And your jacket!'
OnaMama teisi. Vakare prie jūros reikia šiltų drabužių.
Your mum is right. In the evening by the sea you need warm clothes.
ElzėBet prie jūros man niekada nešalta!
But I'm never cold by the sea!
OnaNiekada? Pernai tu buvai mėlyna kaip jūra!
Never? Last year you were as blue as the sea!
ElzėNebuvau! Na... tik truputį.
I wasn't! Well... only a little.
Elzė turns the page and draws a small brown dog with big ears.
ElzėMočiute, žiūrėk: šuniukas! Kaip Ugnės. Aš labai noriu šuniuko!
Grandma, look: a puppy! Like Ugnė's. I really want a puppy!
OnaŠuniuko? O Micius? Miciui nepatinka šunys.
A puppy? And Micius? Micius doesn't like dogs.
ElzėMicius gyvena čia. O šuniukas gali gyventi mūsų bute!
Micius lives here. And the puppy can live in our flat!
OnaO kas jį prižiūri? Tavo tėvai dirba, o tu – mokykloje.
And who looks after it? Your parents work, and you're at school.
ElzėAš moku prižiūrėti! Aš kiekvieną dieną prižiūriu Micių!
I know how to look after animals! I look after Micius every day!
OnaNe, Elze. Micius prižiūri tave.
No, Elzė. Micius looks after you.

On the windowsill the grey tomcat opens one eye, looks at the drawing of the dog, and turns his back on it.
ElzėMama sako: „Šuniui reikia laiko, o aš neturiu laiko.“
Mum says: 'A dog needs time, and I don't have time.'
OnaTai tiesa. Mama daug dirba, todėl ji pavargusi.
That's true. Your mum works a lot, that's why she's tired.
ElzėTodėl aš noriu būti dailininke. Dailininkė dirba namie ir gali prižiūrėti šuniuką!
That's why I want to be a painter. A painter works at home and can look after a puppy!
OnaDailininke? O ne mokytoja, kaip močiutė?
A painter? Not a teacher, like your grandma?
ElzėNe! Mokytojai visada sako „vėliau“.
No! Teachers always say 'later'.
OnaAš niekada nesakau „vėliau“. Aš sakau: „Dabar!“
I never say 'later'. I say: 'Now!'
Afternoon. The rain stops, and the sun comes out over the wet roofs.
ElzėMočiute, saulė! Ar dabar galiu važiuoti dviračiu?
Grandma, the sun! Can I ride my bike now?

OnaGali. Bet su kepure ir šaliku, nes lauke dar šalta.
You can. But with a hat and a scarf, because it's still cold outside.
On her grandmother's phone.
ElzėUgne! Lauke saulė! Ateik į parką su šuniuku!
Ugnė! The sun's out! Come to the park with the puppy!
Evening. Daiva comes into the kitchen, tired, with a wet umbrella.
ElzėMama! Ryte buvo lietus, paskui saulė. Ir Ugnės šuniukas dabar mano draugas!
Mum! In the morning there was rain, then sun. And Ugnė's puppy is my friend now!
DaivaIr tu vėl nori šuniuko, taip?
And you want a puppy again, don't you?
ElzėTaip. Bet vasarą, prie jūros! Ten šuniukui geriau nei mieste.
Yes. But in summer, by the sea! A puppy is better off there than in town.
DaivaGal, Elze. Gal.
Maybe, Elzė. Maybe.
Micius žiūri į šuniuką Elzės albume. Jam tai visai nepatinka.
Micius looks at the puppy in Elzė's sketchbook. He doesn't like it at all.
